Chapter Twenty Seven
Dylan’s P.O.V
It was two hours past the time she was supposed to be there. I grunted in frustration when Maya came over to me again, with a sad look on her face. She came up to me and sat down where Amanda was supposed to be. “Sorry, Dylan. But I don’t think the lucky girl is coming.”
I just shrugged. I already knew that, but I didn’t want to give up. She was the nerdy-church-girl. Would she really stand me up? I don’t think she could even be mean. She wouldn’t stand me up. No, this morning Bekah seemed to be giving off vibes of the exact opposite. She gave me Amanda’s phone number quickly and with a grin, and I could see the excitement in her face when I told her that I was going to ask her out. She wouldn’t have reacted that way if Amanda was just going to ditch me, right?
But who knows. Maybe that’s just all an act. Maybe she doesn’t like me at all and wanted to get away from me as soon as possible. You never know with the quiet ones. Just look at how Sam turned out.
Maya left my table when she realized I wasn’t going to say anything. I sighed and took another sip of my third water. I had been there for two and a half hours. The first half hour, I was pacing, worrying, and wondering if I was dressed okay. The first hour was spent looking at the time on my phone, wondering where she was. The second hour was spent sulking, realizing she wasn’t coming.
“Dylan? What are you doing here?” an oddly familiar male voice called across the room.
Dread crept into my gut. I turned, seeing the man walking towards me. No! Please have just seen another Dylan and not me! But no, he walked right up to my table, and sat down across from me. I winced, seeing the man who had the same color hair as me, except his was graying, and the same eyes. He was also very fit, just like he always was.
“Not even going to say hello to your old man?” he asked now, waving down Maya.
She gave me a look with wide eyes before turning to the man in front of me. “Yes, sir. Can I help you with something?”
“Yes. Get me a Coke and a piece of chocolate cake for Dylan. He sure looks like he could use it. So glum.” He said, winking at her.
I think he had forgotten that Maya was my mother’s best friend, and that she would surely be hearing of that later. He was always a flirt, and I never understood it until I was only enough. Sitting in front of me, was my father. The one and only man who threatened my mom and me. He was the one threatening to send me to military school to shape me up.
“I don’t want it, Maya.” I grunted to her.
“No, no. Get the boy the cake. He needs it. Get his mood up a bit. Go now.” he said, turning to me now. “What’s go you so down? I haven’t seen that face since I left your mother.”
I flinched from his words. How could he talk about it so easily like it was nothing in the world? This man who taught me how to ice skate, the one I always looked up to and wanted to copy. How?! “Nothing you need to know about. You’re not my father anymore. So you can just leave me alone.”
“Oh, don’t say that. You might hurt my feelings. I’ve thought a lot about you. Even saved you from your own destruction. You could at least be thankful.”
He had a point, but not in the way he thought. I was thankful he did that because I met Amanda because of it. Though, thinking about her only brought my mood lower. I missed her, and I wanted her to be with me instead of him. I wanted to be laughing with her, commenting her, and just being with her in general. We could be anywhere and I would be happy.
