Chapter Twenty Two

Amanda’s P.O.V

I woke up hearing a meow. At first, I thought it was Dylan trying to play a trick on me. Until I heard several meows at once. I sat up now, and opened my eyes. I blinked down at what I saw. Four kittens were sitting on my legs. Along with Nate’s cat, Jinx. Two of the kittens were battling each other, and the other two were just exploring my bed.

“Surprise!” Nate exclaimed, jumping out of my closet.

I screamed, causing the kittens to look at me and meow. I held a hand to my thumping heart and tried to calm my breathing. He really scared me. Who did he think he was? Jumping out of my closet first thing in the morning, leaving kittens on my bed. Sure, he’s my brother, but he can’t just wake me up in the morning by almost scaring me half to death.

“Nate! What are you doing here so early?” I asked groggily, rubbing my hands over my eyes.

“I’m here to show you the kittens! Jinx just had them a few days ago. But I’ve been so busy that I couldn’t show you. Also! I talked to mom and dad, and they are letting you have one! Any one! Just pick and choose, dear sister!” Nate chirped, sitting on my bed and taking Jinx into his arms and stroking the soft fur on her back. She purred back at him happily.

“You were always a morning person.” I grumbled. But brightened as I looked at all the kittens. They were all so cute it was hard to choose. They were all so small, fluffy, and adorable. They were like little babies. Stunned with the world.

I held out my hand and they instantly flocked it, pawing it, sniffing it, and licking it. They were all meowing, and I couldn’t help but giggle. I wish I could have all of them. But that wouldn’t be possible. I’m sure my mom and dad wouldn’t let me keep all of them. That would be impossible.

“Hey, you’re reading mom’s book? Is it any good?” Nate suddenly asked.

I looked up from the kittens. He was holding the one book of hers’ that I had read. “Yeah. I actually finished that one. It’s the only one I read. Why? Have you been avoiding her books too?”

“Yeah. So I’m guessing you had started out ignoring them, then read one for the heck of it? It was good, right? Dad used to always talk about how good she was of an author.”

“Yeah, she’s certainly good. I think she got a lot of her ideas from us though. There were a lot of moments in the book that I recognized but couldn’t put my finger on. Though, instead, it’s a good son, and two partying daughters. How much more obvious can she get?”

He laughed. “Yeah, that’s pretty obvious. Well, can I borrow this? I think it’s time for me to read one too. I’ve been talking to them more, and am deciding to give them another chance. I think we should all go out to dinner one of these days as a family.”

I nodded. “It’s a good idea on both parts. Go ahead and take my book as long as you need to. I finished it anyway. Now, I really need to choose a kitten before I go to school. Otherwise it’ll bug me all day!” I exclaimed, looking back down at the little furry rascals who were now tumbling over each other in a cute little brawl. They were meowing quietly at each other and seemingly just having fun.

I studied each kitten. They all had blue eyes from their mother, and the grey and white fur she had too. They all looked so alike. Though their markings were different.

“I’d say, pick one that matches your personality.” Nate offered, sitting back down on the end of my bed with Jinx still in his hand.

I bit my bottom lip in concentration. One that matches my personality? Does that mean one that loves church, is kind, and is a nerd? But how would that be possible?! I held out my hand again and they all flocked it again. One kind of hung back, however. I watched it. It just crept up and rubbed its head on my hand. It was soft and very cute. The others were pawing me and licking me.
