Chapter Twenty Three

Dylan’s P.O.V

I sat down on the bench beside the ice rink, pulling off my sneakers and pushing my feet into my pair of Bauer ice skates and lacing them up. It’s been about a year since I’ve been on the Jefferson Raven’s hockey team. Well, at least since the last season ended. It was needless to say that I missed being on the ice, and I really enjoyed it.

I basically grew up at this rink since I’ve been playing since I could be on a team. My dad was the one who taught me, and even though he’s not in the picture, I still skate because it’s the only thing I can lose myself in. The feel of the chilly air surrounding me now, and on the rink; though I don’t feel it anymore because I’m so used to it. The smell of hot chocolate and popcorn in the warm room. The feel of the almost imaginary blade under my feet that I can barely feel anymore. It seemed like I was walking in shoes, not on a thin metal blade.

I finally stood up, not wobbling a bit on the hard floor on the thin blade, and just stood, observing everything. The way the paint was coming off some of the far walls, and the scuff marks on the glass surrounding the rink. I looked onto the rink and saw all my friends skating around, chasing a puck and laughing. They weren’t in their uniform since it wasn’t the season, but it was more fun without it.

I finally stepped onto the ice easily, and glided until I stopped in the middle, my friends stopping to come over to me. I loved the sound of the grating sound of my blades on the ice below my feet. I looked at Henry who was gliding up to me, a grin on his face. He clapped me on the back, but I stopped myself from moving forward by changing the direction of my skates a little.

“You guys ready to play a game?” I said, grinning, holding my own right handed hockey stick in my hand, looking at all the guys happily.

“You know it, Captain!” they all said simultaneously.

I grinned at the name. I was the captain of the hockey team here, and I loved it. Henry was the co-captain incase I was ever off the ice when we needed to talk to the ref. That’s the captains job.

We all split up on the ice and I put the puck in front of the two teams we had split up into. To make it fair, I was on one team, and Henry was on the other. Henry and I faced off, and I hit the puck first, sending it far to the left. All of us skated quickly after it, smiling.

When rock music turned on, we all paused to see Ethan in the booth where the announcer sits and the person who plays music. A bunch of us gave him thumbs up before continuing our game, shouting, laughing, racing, and trying to score goals.

I was on my back, laughing, because we were all monkey piled on top of each other. Of course, being captain, I was on bottom. I laughed and began shoving people off me after a few minutes of bickering, laughing, and being squished. I instantly stood up when I was free and began pulling the arms of my friends, helping them up.

When we heard the door open, we all looked, and I was surprised to see the one person I hadn’t expected. Amanda was walking through the door. Her hair was in a pony tail, and she was wearing a light blue sweat shirt. What do girls call it? Baby blue?

She sat down on the same bench I had, and soon enough, she was gliding onto the ice with almost as much ease as I had. She grinned at all of us before skating over to me.

“Is she…” Henry began, frowning.

“Wearing figure skates?” I finished for him, gaping at the skates on her feet.

“No! Get off our ice, girl! This is hockey ice right now. You girly girl nerds can come on later.” A guy shouted at her from the back of our horde.
