Chapter 7:

(Ellie's POV)

I couldn't believe what I was hearing. My mother siding against my dad. I'd never heard her do that before. And defending the vampires? This was new territory for me. Was she defending them or was she defending me? I heard my dad break the silence.

"Yes?" He asked. She didn't respond. I wanted to be in the room so badly but I didn't want to show myself listening and stop the conversation.

"I can't believe what I'm hearing" He snarled with disgust.

"You need to understand that the boys didn't want to become vampires. It was never a choice for them." She spoke as he stayed silent.

"You can't kill someone for something they didn't choose" She continued. The silence was deafening for a few minutes as they both went silent.

"I'm not sure I can let you continue to do this."

"Do what?" He asked.

"Hurt them."

"Helen. Are you okay? Have you lost your mind?"

"Don't be silly Ryan."

"Helen. I'm being as serious as I've ever been. I'm trying to protect this family. I don't understand where this has come from?"

"I kept my distance and let you try to do what you needed to do because I didn't know what to do but now it's gone too far."

"What's gone to far?"

"Your obsession with the vampires. This needs to stop. This isn't good for you. This isn't good for anyone."

"I'm not obsessed. I refuse to be threatened any longer by them."

"The only threat here is you."

"Don't push me Helen." He stated.

"No. You're pushing us away. I think you've gotten confused with who you're fighting against. I love you Ryan but you are fighting against that love." I could hear the raw emotion in her voice. The upset tone. The defending heartbreak. I wasn't the only one in this family that felt alone and her voice now was clear.

"Everything I've done is to protect us." He shouted back.

"No Ryan. Everything you have done is to protect yourself" She argued.

"And what's the supposed to mean?"

"It means you exactly what I said it does. Your priorities are all wrong and they have been for some time. Your daughter is hurting and you are adding to the pain." At this moment, all I wanted to do was burst in to their conversation. But I knew I couldn't. I needed to hear my mother fight me, to know I wasn't in wrong .

"She will learn it's for the greater good"

"Your greater good."

"So what? You're siding with the blood suckers?" He asked with disgust laced in his tone.

"I will not let you kill them."

"You don't have a choice. I've got the spell and I will finish what we started."

"There's always a choice." I heard my mother say before I heard something slide across a surface.

"Helen no stop!" I heard him shout before a loud bang vibrated the house. I ran into the room to see both of them on the floor and a scorch mark on the floor. I ran to my mother to help her up which she accepted the help.

"What have you done?" My dad said scrambling to the scorch mark. It looked like it was the remnants of a potion. Once my mother was standing, she used her magic to close all the doors shut suddenly.

"Helen." My dad spoke, using his magic to levitate the potion and spell book towards him..

"Ryan. Stop." My mother spoke, using her magic to bring it to us. I could see that he was stronger so I used my magic to add to my mothers

"No" I said getting in between them both. We were both trying to push each other with our magic but were hitting a wall. I could feel the strength of my dad's magic pushing me down but with a deep breath, I felt the power table turn.

"Ellie don't." She said reaching out to my shoulder. I could see that my power was growing and I had no control. I could see it written over my dad's face, he could see I was panicking but kept on pushing me. I blinked and in a second, I was out of the house and in the street outside of the portal.

"What the?" I muttered as I felt the power stop abruptly.

"We have to go." She said taking my hand and pulling me towards the portal exit.

"What was that?" I said pulling my hand back away from her. I didn't know why I did but in all of the confusion, I didn't want to feel like I was being led into a trap. I couldn't understand my feelings but I knew something was wrong and I didn't know what.

"It's a spell that we created to kill the portal and anything within it." She explained looking around us. My dad didn't not hold that sort of power, he would have to conjure it and that amount of power would contain dark magic.

"Dark magic?" I asked

"Yes and it's clearly consuming your father. We have to go before he comes here. We're no longer safe here." She explained holding tightly to the book and she turned to the exit of the portal. People around us were looking at us, clearly recognising who we were and were talking amongst themselves.

"Why?" I asked. She clearly rolled her eyes getting annoyed with all my questions but I didn't want to go any further feeling like I had half a story.

"I've taken his grimoire. He's weak without it. I'll explain more later but for now we need to go." She explained grabbing me by the hand and pulling me. It didn't take much resistance this time as I followed her through the portal.
