Chapter 25:
(Ellie's POV)
I got up out of bed and decided to face the day and whatever it would bring. I slid on my black skinny jeans, a black strappy vest with sweetheart neckline and my black cardigan, pushing up the sleeves. I grabbed my black buckled heeled boots and pulled my wavy hair out of my cardigan, pushing it back with my hand, making my way downstairs.
When I reached the stairs, I saw a crowd of witches struggling to fit in through the front door and into the living room, stopping me.
"What on earth?" I muttered to myself, gaining some attention. I carried on downstairs and squeezed through the crowd to try and find my mother.
"Excuse me?" I said struggling as the crowd began to part to let me through. I saw my mother at the front talking to the crowd with a speech as she was receiving questions.
"While he recovers, I will be helping guide my daughter, the eire. This will not be an easy process but we will ensure the community is protected." She explained. This was news to me. I knew she had mentioned it but to make it official caught me off guard.
"The wolves have returned and are already making threats to the witches." My mother's friend's husband said, his arms crossed. I could see my mother was struggling to answer everyone. My father usually led on meetings, she usually kept to the sidelines for the image.
"I say let them. We should show them who's boss." A random person shouted from the crowd making others roar in conversation.
"Where is Ryan?" Another person asked.
"Ellie?" Laura voice called to me, her hand reaching my shoulder making me turn her direction.
"Hey. I'm so glad to see you. What's going on?" I said hugging her.
"Everyone knows what's happening with your dad and there was an attack on the portal last." She explained. As happy as I was to see Laura, I could see the severity of the situation written on her face. She was clearly worried and I couldn't blame her.
"The wolves?" I asked. She shook her head in response.
"Vampires. Old ones. Your mum was saying that it relates to a portal coming undone?" She explained. The same portal that held Harry had released them. And others followed. I closed my tightly at the news knowing exactly what she meant.
"Everyone please calm down. I understand that this is a stressful time. But we really need to unite otherwise this will tear apart our community." My mother's voice called over the noise. The crowd murmurs and chat grew louder as she continued to answer questions. I saw Liam's caller ID come up on my phone surprising me. I knew he would be trying to reach out after yesterday but in the mix of the now chaos, it knew was an another problem put on my plate.
"Ellie?" He asked once I answered the call as I moved out of the crowd, heading for the stairs to be able to hear him. I ran up them as fast I could to get away from the shock.
"Hey." I said, running up the stairs.
"Hey," he replied. His tone was full of hurt and my heart stopped.
"Is everything okay?" I asked, leaning on the wall.
"Actually, no, but it's not something I can talk about over the phone. Can you come round? I think we need to talk about this." He explained. I looked at my watch and then back around the corner of the hallway down the stairs at the people knowing that this wasn't going to be over until every person was out of the house.
"Yeah sure. I'll be round within the hour. I've just got to finish what I was up to here, and then I'll be round," I answered forming an idea in my head. They wanted me to lead the witches and I knew the only way to do that was to lead them now.
"Okay, cool, see you soon," he said sounding relieved. I'm glad one of us was feeling better.
"Okay, bye." I said hanging up on him. I ran down the stairs and pushed my way through the crowd earning some grunts and moans until I managed to reach where my mother was stood.
"Alright enough everyone." I stated boldly making everyone fall quiet.
"I understand you are all scared and tired and want to know what we're going to do about the vampires and the wolves and the portal. But as it stands right now trying to bombard my mother isn't going to help. I will call a council meeting for this evening to discuss all the issues but in the meantime my mother and myself will cast a protection spell over the portal."
"How do we know it will actually protect us?" A lady from the front asked. Her fragile state
"You won't. But it'll be better than the alternative." She looked down nodding as she turned away, the crowd slowly dispersing. I shook my head feeling like I was in a bad reality I wanted to escape. I faced my mother who leaning on the of a sideboard with her arms and legs crossed, looking defeated. I crossed my arms as I took a step towards her, feeling the same way.
"Everything is going from bad to worse." I commented.
"It's going to get simple soon enough." She said her eyes wide in looking shocked and reluctant to tell me what she was thinking.
"What do you mean?" I asked.
"You're going to have to take your father's position and lead this coven." She said. No. This can't be happening. No. It was too much. Everything with my father, Harry, the witches, it was all happening too fast.
"I can't I -" I said.
"I'm sorry but I don't think your father is giving you much of a choice." She explained, cutting my excuses off. She was right. My choices were becoming far and few and I took a breath.
