Chapter 22:

(Harry's POV)

When the the drinks came, I handed the waitress the money in cash with a generous tip hoping she would get the hint and leave us alone. I took of sip of my drink as she left. Ellie looked over at me  and cautiously took a drink herself. She was clearly uncomfortable with me and sitting here together alone wouldn't have made it easier on her. But I needed answers and I knew deep down she would be the only person who could help me.

"So. What did you want to talk about?" She asked, glaring into me.

"Us. You. Everything I guess." I answered leaning back in my chair

"Us?" She laughed condescendingly. She stopped herself and leant forward slightly.

"There is no us. There never was, never will be." She continued firmly as if the thought of an us repulsed her. The whole tone of the conversation felt different from yesterday, it felt like there was a lot of hurt and I wanted to know why.

"How do we know each other then?" I quizzed.

"Through Niall. I've had a lot a time to reflect and looking back it probably wasn't because Niall wanted us to meet." She explained. My heart twitched. She was with Niall? I didn't understand, I couldn't.

"You were with Niall?" I asked. Why didn't Niall say anything yesterday? He didn't look like a man who had this type of history with her yesterday. In fact he seemed more bothered about me than I should have been with him with this being the case.

"Were is the important word there." She laughed.

"What happened?" I questioned.

"He had a job to do and you made sure he did. It killed me when he chose that job over me."  She explained flatly as if it hurt to talk about it. I could see the emotion written all over her face as she spoke.

"Oh." I commented. I felt like I was dancing with the ghost of my memories, not knowing when the dance would twist and turn, feeling completely lost with two left feet as I listened. Deep down I didn't believe it. I knew there was something deeper between us, more than she was admiring. Even as I felt detached from her, I knew she was the key.

"Yeah. I've had a lot of time to get over it. It feels like a different lifetime even."  She explained twirling her drink, fading into the memory.

"Were we friends?" I asked.

"No. You hated me. You wanted me dead." She stated taking a drink.

"Why?"

"Like i said. You had a job and I was in the way." She said putting her glass down, her face looking lost in the memories of pain.

"Why do I feel like there's more?" I questioned wanting to know more. It all didn't connect.

"In what way?"

"Like there was more between us that you're not telling me?" I asked. I knew she wasn't lying. When people lie, their heart rate increases and we can hear the blood bumping faster. But after talking to her, I could see she was being coy with the truth but being honest non the less.

"If I was a completely different person then maybe but there was nothing more than a few moments." She said. In an instant, I felt my body bruise as a wave of pain washed over me, taking me aback. Ellie watched me and stood as I did as we both saw the force push itself into me. To the eye there was nothing there but my actions said differently. I looked around me quickly to see if anyone or anything were there or if any sudden movements around me, but there was nothing.

"What was that?" I asked looking back forwards. She grabbed my left arm and turned my forearm up to reveal and mark of an X scarred into my skin, on line of the X straight and the other curved. I didn't know what it meant and I didn't know how I got this. I looked over at her arm to see if she had the same on either of her hands but they were clean and clear.

"It's magic. This is the mark someone who has connected their soul to another." She explained sitting back in her chair, letting go of my arm. I looked at my arm cautiously. More magic? What was I playing in?

"Why would I do that?" I asked sitting back down.

"I don't know but whoever you're linked to must have been hurt." She replied. Maybe it was the guys? Or Simon? It could have been anyone if the reason was linked to this memory loss.

"Well that helps. More cryptic information leading to nothing that won't help me remember." I said.

"It all helps Harry. The fact that you can't remember now doesn't mean you won't."

"It's alright that you can say that. You have your memories."

"Why do I feel like this is a trap?" She asked, arms crossed.

"Why?"

"The last time you saw me. And I mean the last time you really saw me you wanted me dead. And now -"

"I wanted you dead?" I asked interrupting her.

"You needed me dead. It was your job, you were hired to kill me and family."

"Is that why they stripped my memories?" I asked.

"How would I know?" She asked laughing me off. What was she talking about? One minute she's telling me one thing and the next she was acting as if yesterday never happened. I looked into her looking for a reaction. Our eyes connected but her glower felt cold. She diverted her gaze away quickly back down to her drink.

"Oh. Well maybe then." She muttered agreeing with me cautiously. She grabbed her glass a top another drink as I watched her.

"Look at the time. I best be going. That fresh start is waiting for me and I'm not going to anywhere sat here." She said smiling, checking her pockets before standing. I stood up not wanting her to leave just yet. I had so much more to ask.

"Wait-" I said before my head suddenly erupted in a headache pulling me into a memory.
