Chapter 19:
(Ellie's POV)
I came downstairs from my bedroom exhausted and drained. Everything that has happened and all that I have gained and lost felt heavy. I was aiming for the kitchen when my ears picked up my mother's voice stopping me at the top of the stairs.
"Give me the book Helen." I heard my dad's voice downstairs. I practically ran when I heard his voice but managed to stop at the door. My mother or him couldn't see me but I could see them. He wasn't there, she had conjured him in a spell and I saw how he was standing in a salt ring. I turned away so my back was leaning on the wall so they couldn't see me but I could hear.
"Is that all you care about?"
"No, and you know that. I need the book to fix our daughter's mess."
"No, you want the book for power."
"What have I done that has made you turn against me like this?"
"You are using dark magic and you are tearing this family apart. Do not try and make out as if it's me that has the problem."
"I am not the one who ran away from our home."
"You took things too far Ryan, you left me no choice."
"We always have a choice. And you're choosing wrong. I love you Helen. Please understand that if nothing else."
"I know you do but I'm doing what's best."
"Are you? from what I can see you ran away back to our old home, away from our coven and are sacrificing your daughter to the vampires."
"I am not sacrificing her."
"Letting her be with the blood sucker is a sacrifice. How many times do I need to keep repeating myself? If Ellie dies, Ophelia will return."
"Not will, could. We don't know-"
"-Oh Helen you are smarter than this."
"And so are you. You are throwing everything away because of dark magic and a scary story."
"I will get that grimoire back. And I'm going to fix everything."
"Please. Don't do this." She pleaded. Her voice sounding disappointed but strong.
"Ryan?" she asked as I entered the room. He was gone. All that was left was my mother standing there in front of a salt circle.
"Oh! You made me jump!" She said loudly jumping out of the skin.
"Sorry." I replied.
"How much did you hear?" She said looking into the salt circle thinking deeply.
"All of it?" I said standing next to her looking into the space seeing nothing but the remains of her spell.
"Oh." She muttered as she went deeper into her thought. I couldn't begin to imagine what she would have been feeling.
"Dark magic huh?" I commented. She began brushing the salt into her dustpan in silence from the side. I could see she was hurt and upset by what was said. For the first time since we left, I thought of everything she was giving up for me, for she felt was right. That went against everything she stood for.
"I'm not entirely surprised." I continued trying to coax something out of her but she ignored me and took the dustpan away towards the kitchen.
"I'm sorry." I said as we entered the kitchen leaning on the side of the door way as she made her way towards the hidden bin.
"For what?" She replied.
"For everything." I commented. My gaze fell to floor finding it hard to look at her expression. The guilt covering me like a blanket. She gave up everything for me and now it's time I return the favour.
"You gave up everything for me and now I feel like it was all for nothing." I continued as she walked back towards me.
"Well don't." She said taking my hand in hers, gaining my eye contact.
"I chose to walk away from your father. And not just because of you. And I won't go into the details because that's between me and your father. But what you need to know is that you don't need to feel any guilty or regret because of me because this is something I should have done long ago." She explained, the softness in her eyes making me feel like I was finally home, that we were finally back to being how we were, and I hadn't felt that feeling in so long I nearly forgot what it was like.
"Leave dad?" I asked unsure by what she meant.
"Put you first." She said, squeezing my hand smiling. She let go and walked around me leaving me in my thoughts. If she could leave everything she ever knew behind, I could leave Harry behind. She did was right and I knew I needed to do the same. To give him a chance at freedom meant letting him go and be free.
I walked towards the refrigerator and grabbed myself a salmon salad, sitting down at the kitchen island trying to remember the last time I slept and actually rested without the worry and heartbreak. After eating, I placed my plate in the dishwasher and made my way up to bed.
***
My dream felt so real. Me and Harry were dancing in an empty room, band was playing but they were nowhere to be seen. His white long sleeved T-shirt clean and baggy wrapped around me as we slow danced to the beat of a sad song. I was dressed in a white slip that clung to my body as we swayed, holding each other. One of my arms was wrapped around his waist as the other clung to the back of his shoulders, my head buried in his chest. We danced for a while as I felt my body sway and enjoy the moment of being held by him.
"I wish it could always be like this." I whispered against his chest. I felt him press a kiss into my hair, holding me tighter.
"Me too." He replied. Suddenly, Harry pulled away from my body taking a step back and looked at the ground, his reaction startling me making me take a step back. He looked back towards me, hurt in his eyes.
"Harry?" I asked.
"Help me." He said before he put his hands to his head in pain, screaming in agony. I took a step towards him, stopping when Harry raised his head, his eyes black and hungry, ready to hunt.
