I was surprised when that night, Josh invited me to his tent. He promised me it was nothing weird, just a chat. I stepped into his tent to find him wallowing on the floor. Before I could ask if he was okay, he howled loudly. It was blood curling yet strangely, after he calmed down, he acted like it never happened.
'Very...very sorry about that. That happens before I turn human.'
'I don't understand. Why're you human for two hours?' I asked curiously, taking a few more steps towards the man.
'It was a curse. My mother wasn't able to stop me from being human so she made my mind shift into that of a dogs from twelve to ten. Physically, I never change but mentally I'm all over the place. Would you like to see?' Josh offered,
'I guess, how though?'
He lifted his arm, placing it on his chest. What he did next, I didn't expect. He dug his whole hand literally into his chest. There was no blood, it was more like pulling something out of a bag. He retracted his hand. His clawed fingers held his still beating heart.
'Hold out your hand.' He instructed. I obeyed, lifting my arm and extending my fingers. He placed his heart on my palm and I suddenly felt something indescribable. It felt like a whole war broke out inside my head, resulting in mass discord. I gasped, yet felt unable to move. My whole body quaked with fear and strangely, anger. It was as though I was a lone child between two battling nations. Suddenly, it all stopped. Everything became clear in that one moment before I returned to normal. It all became clear at that moment, literally. My vision was as clear as ever, my senses felt as though they had been heightened and beyond all that, I felt more alert.
I was pulled back to reality when I herd Josh scream. I was holding him to the ground, my hand around his throat. I wasn't squeezing too hard, yet he was still in agony. My eyes wandered down to find his hand back in his chest, presumably to put his heart back. His shirt was ripped in that particular spot and for obvious reasons. He may be magic but his clothes obviously weren't. That was when I noticed something being burned into his skin. It looked like the king chess piece and it looked as though someone was burning it onto his neck with hot metal. Yet, there was no one there. Josh gasped loudly as the burning subsided and he was left with a scar.
'S-Sorry...that happens.' He choked out. I retracted my hand and looked at my nails, noticing I now had claws. I was sat on his lap, my hands on his lower torso. Neither one of us really said anything about it, probably because it was the least weird thing either of us had ever seen.
'Why was I chocking you like that?'
'You turned into me for a few moments. I'm just better at controlling myself than you are. I am constantly hunted by massacre-driven thoughts and temptations, you actually did them though. You were more rough than me, though but I guess that's what happens when you have repressed rage.' Josh sat up, not really caring that I was sitting in his lap.
'I don't have repressed rage.'
'Exactly what someone with repressed rage would say.' He sassed. I thought for a moment about my history and how I dealt with it.
'Okay, maybe I do. However, unlike you guys I can't go on random killing sprees. I'm not magic.'
'Sure you are. You found this place, you must have a bit of magic in you. You were able to grow some on my body features too. There's no way you're completely human. Then again, Chris probably shared some of his powers with you while you slept. He likes doing that. It's like eating after starving yourself to him.' If I'm honest, those words didn't surprise me. That seemed like something Chris would do.
'So, how do I use these powers?' I eagerly awaited his response, hoping I could learn some tricks from him.
'I could teach you what I know if you want. However, I don't know much. If you really want to learn some cool stuff, ask Ryan or Chris. However, I suggest once I teach you everything I know, go to Ricky, then Ryan, then Chris. But beware of Ryan, he'll eat your eyeballs.' Josh joked, or at least I thought he was joking. I laughed gently but his face was unchanged and flat.
'Holy shit you're actually serious.' My smile dropped as Josh sighed.
'Yes, sadly, I am. See, Ryan has no soul. You know how people say the eyes are the windows to the soul?'
I nodded.
'Well. He steals your eyes and puts them in this box under his bed. He steals souls because he believes that if he obtains enough he'll get a soul. That, however, just simply isn't true. If he did consume all those souls he'd become thousands of different people. His mind would literally melt from all those memories and emotions. He'd rot from the inside out. Unless, of course the last soul he collects is from one who is pure of heart and free of sin. Then, he would become a god. The mix of purity and impurity would, of course, kill him after a quintillion years or so. Purity can only survive among sin for so long.' Josh explained. I stood up and allowed him to get to his feet before speaking.
'What if he only collects pure souls?'
'He'll become a mortal again. See, what he does is every month he steals a soul from a immortal, usually me, Ricky or Chris. Our souls grow back, he has enough pieces of our souls to make a second version of each of us. It's disgusting.' Josh shivered with cringe. I was about to ask how it was disgusting but he spoke before be. 'But, even if its gross no one will stop him. Plus it's not like I care. I'm the youngest and he only has three hundred years worth of soul pieces from me. Compared to what he needs, that isn't much. It is enough to simulate my humanity, but that's because I have so little of it. You probably don't understand, it's beyond your mortal comprehension.' I couldn't help but feel a little offended, but I was human and humans get offended. That's just how it is. I went to tell him he was human too but some part of me found it degrading to be reminded of my species. I felt small compared to the creatures here. All the beautiful humanoids walking around like everyone was made to serve them. That's when I started thinking.
'Could my species change?' I asked. Josh's ears perked up and he quickly responded without thinking.
'No. Don't go down that road, it's too dangerous. I can promise you that being human is a gift, don't throw it away for anything or anyone. Ash tried that and she...she was never the same.' Josh paused to breath. During that short time in shifted in my spot and spoke.
'What happened to her?'
'I would like to drop the subject if you don't mind.' He started speaking mere milliseconds after I did and I couldn't help but find it disturbing. His suddenly anxiety was apparent and it shone through everything he said. 'Anyway, I wanted to ask you something. It's not exactly normal but I need help.'
'What is it?'
'Tomorrow night is our show. We uncover this place and let people see our tricks and we steal their things. I need you to help me with getting ready. Specifically, I need you to help my cover up all my scars. You seem like your good at hiding things.'
I felt offended again, but said nothing. 'Yeah, I guess I am. How did you want me to help?'
'I don't know. Makeup or something. I would do it myself but recently I got into a fight with a werewolf who mistook me for one of their pack. He cut all the way up my spine and to the bottom of my neck. I can't exactly reach it.'
'Will people be seeing your back?'
'Well...no, it's just that...there's this human and I-'
'Say no more. I get it. Josh it screwing a human.' I teased, watching as he growled.
'No, that's not it. She checks up on me, medically.' He grunted, obviously annoyed.
'Why? And if that's the case then why do you want to hide a giant scar on your back?' I was confused by him. Not just with the medical care thing, but everything about him confused me. Especially how he could function with a war in his heart.
'I told her I'd stop getting into fights. She was worried about me.' He looked down, as though he was feeling guilty.
'And why do you feel the need uphold that promise?' I hinted, hoping to get a confession out of him.
'Because she's had a hard life. She thinks of me as her brother and she worries about me.' He seemed to become more agitated as my persistence. I suddenly understood their relationship, but was still disappointed by the fact that they were just friends.
'Doesn't she have family?'
'She had a son but...he died while she was pregnant with him. Her husband ran away after the miscarriage. I felt obligated to provide mental support. She tried to gain a relationship with me but I told her that she needed a mortal. She liked me because I was inhuman.' He sighed, lifting his arm and rubbed the back of his neck. I asked him why he didn't use one of his spells like he did with Chris. 'Those still leave scars, it just makes them heal quicker.'
I agreed to help him in the end but only out of concern for the woman who he was seeing afterwards.
