Not Good Enough For You

When (Y/n) and Ricky finally came home, it was past 9:00pm and he was incredibly blushy. She didn't seem to think much of it but he was incredibly happy, his fingertips gently brushing against his lips. 'Oh come on, you can't be that happy about it.' She teased, kindly shutting the door behind him as he stuffed his hands into his pockets and spoke nervously.
'Can't help it...you're cute.' I hadn't seen Ricky this happy before- I was almost disappointed at the reminder that it had to end. Chris, who was sitting next to me, subtly reached beside him and trapped my wrist in his white-knuckle grip. I looked over at him, noticing how low his head hung- to the point where his midnight black hair fell over his eyes.
'I hate it, Devin...I can't breathe...' he muttered just audibly. We were sitting on the couch, casually watching Dracula until they came in. 'She kissed him...his memories, I saw her kiss him...'
'Chris, it...' I trailed off once I felt his grip tighten enough for my bones to snap under my flesh. I didn't tell him, however. After living in perpetual agony for a hundred years, pain really didn't bother me much. However, I was a bit concerned that I wouldn't be able to use my wrist again after he shattered my bones. '...did you want to go somewhere else?'
'Why does he make her happier than I do? She's smiling around him but...whenever I'm involved, she barely reacts...I miss when she reacted to me. She's get all cute when I tried to kiss her and she'd scream her head off when seeing the corpses I created...' The way he spoke was almost exactly like he did when he found out his cousin was "missing". I couldn't stand it.
'Hey you two, how's it going?' (Y/n) plopped down on the spot beside me, completely unaware of what Chris was experiencing. I was about to ask him if he was feeling any better, but he immediately looked up at her as if nothing was wrong.
'We're fine. How'd today go?' He smiled, all signs of depression suddenly vanishing.
No matter how long I stayed beside Chris, he'd always surprise me.
'Good. Ricky and I saw a movie and wandered around the city and even found an ice-cream place that has a secret menu for vampires and cannibals!' She really did seem happy. Chris was practically dying, however. He was so close to tearing my hand off that it was legitimately beginning to frighten me. I responded by looking over at him and letting out a small, shaky breath. He immediately let his eyes widen before looking down at our hands, realising what he had been doing.
'Shit, I- Fuck...' he sighed, catching (Y/n)'s attention.
'Is something wrong?' She asked, looking more annoyed than concerned. I looked over at her, dead serious and getting the urge to scream at her until I took a moment to breathe. She noticed my expression, however, and let her own soften.
'Chris and I were going to go out tonight but you and Ricky took so long that we're just disappointed that we couldn't go anywhere.' I lied, internally warming up when I noticed Chris comfortingly running his thumb across my shattered wrist.
'Oh, shit, I'm sorry. I stayed out way too long. You guys can still go out if you want, though.'
'No, I think we'll just stay inside. But, if you could, I'd really like someone to eat.' I watched as she sighed and got up to her feet, very obviously tired from the day.
'Alright. I'll go-'
'No, wait...' I watched as Chris got up after her and stuffed his hands into his pockets awkwardly. 'I-I...um...I know a good place to go...'
'Why don't you go show (Y/n) for future reference?' I suggested, watching as (Y/n) approached the front door with Chris following silently behind her.
'That sounds easy enough. We'll be back soon, alright?'
'Yep. Bye, Chris. Bye, (Y/n)!' They both said bye before leaving, giving me a second before raising my limp hand to my lap. I winced when I felt how my bones shifted under my flash, and let out a shaky breath. 'Fuck...'
'Are you okay?' I turned after hearing those words and smiled once I noticed Vinny peaking over the back of the couch. It took him a moment but he freaked out the moment he saw the horrific state of my wrist. 'Shit, holy shit, fuck! What happened? Oh shit, what-'
'Oh, don't worry about this. It's just a shattered bone. I can get Chris to regenerate it when he gets back.' I assured him.
'Still...I mean...shit, it looks...' I couldn't help but find it slightly adorable how he was so concerned but was trying his best not to be a bother to me. It was something he did frequently. When we were controlling Catherine, he never did what he wanted to do. He asked me what I thought instead of just doing whatever he wanted.
'It's fine, honestly. I'm a zombie, remember? I can't feel a thing.'
'That's not what I'm thinking about. I'm wondering what happened...Was it Chris?'
'Yeah. He wasn't feeling too good but it's not a problem. But, while you're here, could you change the channel?' I snickered once I noticed practically all the colour in his skin so pale and his eyes fill with nervousness.
'U-Uh, sure, um...what did you want me to put on?'
'Whatever you want.' I honestly just wanted to see him take charge of something for once. It was absolutely adorable watching him internally freak out the moment I spoke and he immediately shook his head and stood up straight.
'I-I- no, I-I, uh!'
'Stop being so nervous and pick something.' He immediately crept over to the television, clicking it on to the channel he wanted and then plopped down on the spot beside me. 'Why are you so freaked out?' I asked.
'Because I...I like you...a lot...and after what I did to both you and (Y/n), I know that I can't be respected by you but I keep fooling myself into thinking I have a chance with someone like you. I mean...you're...I...when I still owned you, I hated seeing you with other guys. Even though you don't remember, occasionally, they'd bruise you. I always made sure to check and when they did, I tortured them. I almost always killed the men who came in and messed with my girls, but I got strangely protective of you.' I was beyond surprised to hear him speak so highly of me. I couldn't help but shift in my spot slightly before running my wonky functioning hand through my hair.
'Wow, uh...I'm...not really sure what to say to that...'
'Say that I'm being stupid and that I'm not good enough for you...please, I need to hear it or else I'll keep telling myself that I have a shot with you...' He sounded so destroyed, to the point where I wanted to try and fix him but I couldn't. I didn't know what to say. I had never thought about him like that before.
'You are good enough...better, in fact...but I'm not the kind of creature you should fall in love with...I'm undead...I'm worse than a human...'
'That's not...I know that that's what Ricky might say, but you're not.'
'Still, Vinny, I can't...I'm just...it's not what I'm good for...you can do better. There's vampires, other sirens, shape-shifters, they're all better than me...' With that, I stood up and stepped silently out of the house, wandering down the stairs and into the store that Catherine was wandering around in.
'Are you leaving, Sir?' She asked, voice as dull and lifeless as a corpse.
'Yeah, I'm...I'm just going for a walk...If anyone asks, tell them I'll be back soon.'
