Song: Reminder-Mumford & Sons
"Okay, just remember that my mother hates when someone brings up her age. She turns into a raging bull. And don't forget that Mark is a dick and to avoid him at all costs." I said as we pulled into the driveway. I looked at the mansion in front of me, scoffing as I realized they had repainted it. The color had changed from a soft yellow to a baby blue.
"Don't worry so much, I have this under control," Elliot smiled at me and adjusted his tie. "Alright, come on." He climbed out of the vehicle after popping the trunk. His door slammed shut and I knew I needed to get out. But my feet were planted to the floor. The fear was finally settling in and I didn't think I could handle it.
Before I knew it, my passenger side door was opened and Elliot peered down at me, a frown present on his face. I knew he was wondering why I had been so nervous; it certainly wasn't because of him. I knew he was going to persuade everyone, but it was the fact that I was going to see Lucas again after a year. And the fact that I was seeing my family for the first time in several months. How was I going to do this? I looked down at Elliot's hand as he offered it to me. I sighed and took it, straightening my half sleeve, maroon dress. My feet were instantly cold as I realized I shouldn't have wore favorite black, skinny heels.
"Hey, look at me," Elliot pressed me against him, smiling. "Don't worry, it will be okay." He snuck his arm around my waist and grabbed our bags; he held them in one hand as if they weighed nothing. I shut the car door and walked Elliot to the door. I rang the doorbell, knowing full well my mother would have a fit if I had just walked in.
Soon Maybel, my mother's housekeeper, answered the door; her eyes lighting up as she noticed me. "Oh my, I'm so glad you're here." She pulled me into a bone crushing hug and I didn't mind one bit. Maybel had been around for years, since before my father passed away. She managed to keep me sane through the rough months following his death.
"I'm so glad to see you, I've missed you," I pulled back and smiled at her before introducing her to Elliot. "Maybel, this is my boyfriend, Elliot." They shook hands and she grabbed our suitcases. I was thankful that my mother wasn't the one to greet us; I wasn't sure if I was ready to see her yet.
"Everyone has been quite busy these last few months. You know Aleah, she plans everything last minute." Maybel rolled her eyes and led us into the living room. My mother was facing away from us as she talked vividly on the phone. I took the moment to look her over; her hair recently dyed blonde. I knew, of course, she could hide it from those around her but never me. Her black pantsuit fit her small frame and her heels were bright red. Leave it to my mother to stand out. I scoffed, watching the woman in front of me.
"Yeah, nice to see you too, mother." I spoke sarcastically. She quickly turned and dropped her phone, her eyes wide.
"Oh, honey! It's so good to see you!" She rushed over and threw her arms around me. I was as stiff as a board, I couldn't hug her back. She didn't hold it against me, though, she knew we weren't on the best of terms. But she has never done anything about it. "And who is this?" She pulled away and looked Elliot over. Oh no, I knew that look all too well.
