Song: Sweet Emotion-The Kooks
One Year Later
I unlocked the front door to the house to hear Christmas music blaring from inside. I smiled and locked the door behind me before making my way to where the music was coming from. I was met with a very underdressed Elliot dancing as he tried to get a fire started in the fireplace. He was only in a pair of sweats and his face was scruffy, something I hadn't seen in awhile. He hadn't noticed me yet so I took the time to watching him straighten things up in the living room. I finally put my luggage down and he jumped, turning towards me with wide eyes.
"Merry Christmas, babe." I smiled and he pulled me into his arms, leaving me breathless. He kissed me, his lips lingering on mine long after we were breathless.
"Mm, I missed you too much. Tell Anthony you're not allowed to leave me ever again." I laughed as we moved to the couch, Elliot pulling my feet into his lap. He massaged and rubbed and I finally began to relax after a stressful week.
"I'm not sure how well he'll take that. He worked my ass off this week." My boss asked me and a few other researchers to go out and explore the coral reefs off the coast for a week and of course I couldn't give an opportunity like that up, but the only downfall was leaving Elliot behind. Due to the fact that there was no reception at sea, I hadn't been able to talk to him all week and it broke my heart.
"How was it, though? You can't tell me you didn't love it." I really did, I loved my job and the work that I did. I felt important and it brought a sense of comfort knowing that my work mattered. For some reason, as soon as I walked into work everyday, it made me smile. Not that I didn't mind working the bar when we lived in New York, but it surely didn't compare to the work I was doing now. Although Elliot wasn't a fan of my long days and sometimes weekends working, he acknowledged that I loved my job and would never comment on it.
I jumped into explaining everything; the scuba diving, collecting data, seeing parts of the sea that some people never get to discover. It was definitely worth working nonstop for. Elliot listened and continued to rub my feet while I talked, something I was extremely thankful for. I finally stopped talking when I smelled something burning.
"Babe? Did you have something in the oven?"
His eyes widened. "Oh fuck me!" He ran up and soon the smoke detector was blaring through the house. I rushed to the kitchen and watched as Elliot pulled slightly burnt blueberry muffins out of the oven. "Well, I was going to surprise you with these, but I fucked up." I shrugged and grabbed one from the pan. I blew on it and took a small bite, ignoring the charred taste of it.
"Anything is better than peanut butter and jelly sandwiches and lunch meat, trust me. Thanks, E." I leaned up and kissed him, reassuring him that I didn't care and soon, his frown was replaced with a smile.
