Chapter 12: 1 Month Earlier

One Month Earlier

Maya's POV

I could feel sharp pains in my stomach and it hurt really bad.  My mom and Lucas were at work and I didn't want to bother them.  It had been a while since I talked to Josh so I called him.

Josh: Hello?

Maya: Hi.

Josh: What's wrong?

Maya: Josh I--I--

Josh: What?

Maya: Ooowwww! Please, Josh?!!---

Josh: Maya, where are you?!!

Maya: At home.

Josh: Stay there I'm coming.

(Josh hung up the phone and within 15 minutes he comes running in.)

Josh: Hey.

Maya: Josh it hurts!

Josh: Ok, ok.

He picks me up (bridal style) and walks out the door.  He carries me downstairs and puts me in his roommates car.  I lie in the back seat crying. Josh drives me to the hospital and gets me out of the car.  Once we get inside the nurses get me on a gurney.  Josh tells them that I'm pregnant and with that they pull me away, from Josh.

Josh's POV

I sit on the chair in the waiting room for about 30 minutes until a nurse comes out and calls my name.  I stand up and she says,

Nurse: Maya has a rare condition it's called placenta previa.

Josh: Ok, what does that mean?

Nurse: It means the stress she is having is affecting the baby.

Josh: Ok so if she doesn't have stress she will be fine right?

Nurse: Not exactly.

Josh: What the hell does that mean?!!

Nurse: If the pregnancy runs perfect and smoothly she and the baby will be fine.

Josh: Ok, but come on.  What if everything doesn't run smoothly?

Nurse: Then you could lose the baby.

Josh: Just the baby, not her right?

Nurse: Well there is a slight chance during labor but a very slight chance.

Josh: And the baby?

Nurse: It might still be harmed one way or another.

(I sit back down and breath heavily.  I don't cry but I sit there just, thinking of all the possibilities.  I can't lose Maya.  Even if the chance is so small, I can't have the risk.  The nurse calls me in and I look at Maya.)

Maya: Hey.

Josh: Hey.

Maya: Why are you looking so sad.

Josh: Maya, I know.

Maya: Josh, don't make it a big deal, please.

Josh: How can I not!

Maya: Josh please?

Josh: I'm sorry, but I can't lose you.  And you know that.

Maya: I know.  And you won't have to.  I'm here to stay.

Josh: Come on Maya.  You can't say that...

Maya: I can because we are talking about me.

Josh: There are other options...

Maya: Like abortion?!!

Josh: I know you would never--

Maya:--That's right Josh I wouldn't so don't even think about it!

Josh: I can't lose you, but the baby...

Maya: This has nothing to do with the baby.

Josh: It wouldn't be like this Maya if there was no baby.

Maya: You're really selfish aren't you?

Josh: If it means saving you, then yes.

Maya: I'm not going to die!  It's a risk Josh!  Some risks are meant to be taken and who knows maybe this child is going to change the world.

Josh: They said you could lose the baby anyway...

Maya: I don't care I need to take the risk.

Josh: Maya, I love you and the baby.  But if this baby takes away your life I don't know how I could love it...

Maya: Josh don't think like that!  I know you would love my baby just the same!

Josh:  Not if you were gone...

Maya: Josh, I'm not getting rid of the baby!  End of discussion!

(Josh starts pacing the floors back and forth with his hands on his head.)

Maya:  Even if something does happen to me Lucas will be there.  And Riley, and you.

Josh: Maya, don't talk like that.

Maya: You brought it up!  I didn't!

(Maya starts crying and I go to give Maya a hug.)

Josh: Maya I love you and I love this baby but I can't lose you.

Maya: You won't lose me.

Josh: How do you know that?

Maya: Because I just do.  I know that there is a reason for everything and even though you might be scared, I'll be ok.

Josh: How are you not scared?

Maya: I am.  I can't show it because that will make other people scared.

Josh: I'm so sorry Maya.

Maya: It's not your fault.

Maya's POV

I leave the hospital that night and Josh drives me home.  I get home and I promise myself if anything happens to me again I will tell Lucas but if nothing happens then I won't need to.  I'm scared but, it's life and I need to get through it.  Luckily for me, I'm not alone.  I have Lucas, Josh, Riley, Topanga, Mr. Matthew, my mom, Shawn, Farkle...And even though I'm scared I can't show them that's why I'm not going to tell them, unless I have to...
