Chapter 23

Maddie's POV:

Sofia arrived in time and she got started immediately, to my pleasure.

I walked up to her and she bowed.

"Good afternoon." She straightened back up and smiled.

"Let's get on with it." I sighed. I hated the fact that I had to call upon someone for help.

"Of course!" Sofia opened the back of her van and a huge cage lumbered in the shadows.

"What is THAT!?" Rayanne walked up with Renee at her heels.

"They're the hunting hybrids." Sofia shrugged and began to unlatch ropes binding the cage to the floor. A deep snarl arose from the creature inside the cage.

"Hybrid?" I asked, my face paling.

"Don't worry! They're trained to only attack their target."

I looked over my shoulder and saw Renee's jaw clench tightly. That was unusual...

"What type of hybrid?" Rayanne daringly walked up to the crate and lifted the sheet covering it.

"Wolf and tiger." Sofia nodded.

A roar erupted from the crate and Rayanne lept away. "Damn!"

Sofia chuckled and unlatch end the crate. "You may want to stand back a bit. They leap quite far."

We all ran back as two vicious looking animals burst from the cage letting out fierce snarls.

"Why did you bring that THING here!?" I cried out.

"Sit down Tiberious!" Sofia snapped. "You too Sharptooth!"

"Send them away." I demanded, trying not to let my voice shake.

"Sure." Sofia shrugged and yelled at them to hunt.

"What will they do!?" Renee cried.

I shot her a look of suprise but Sofia only laughed.

"They'll only maul them slightly and bring them alive to us."

"WHAT!?" Renee screamed.

Sofia looked taken aback and tilted her head. "Uh... I didn't stutter."

"No..." I heard her faintly whisper as she darted in the direction of the disappearing animals.

"RENEE!" I screamed. She ignored me and kept running.

"Where the hell is she going!?" Rayanne asked.

"I've no clue." I muttered. My suspicions had been right. She was going behind my back with something.

"Follow her." I snapped at Rayanne. I won't let everything we worked for fall apart."

"Sha'll I bring her back?" She asked, unsure.

"What do YOU think?" I snarled, narrowing my eyes.

"Right away." Rayanne scrambled in the direction if Renee and disappeared.

"Whoa." Sofia murmured. "What.."

"Leave so I can think please." I turned to her. "Now."

"Yes ma'am." Sofia bowed quickly and scuttled away

I stalked away and looked out at the woods. The quiet worried me... But it soothed me at the same time...

Renee wouldn't... She... She couldn't... She was my best friend...

I shook my head angrily. I had to face facts. The girl I had grown up with was keeping something hidden from me and I intended to find out what it was.
