Chapter 26:

Renee's POV:

"You're all set." I pressed the last of the bandages to his skin, causing a wince of pain. I looked up at Niall. "We have to move now."

He nodded and beckoned for me to lead the way. I could tell from the look on Harry's face that he was not pleased by this action.

As always, I ignored him and walked out of the cave. The cold night air wrapped around me like a blanket, the wind slightly lifting the hair off my shoulders.

I heard a sharp howl in the distance. The hybrids were hot on our trail.

"Quickly." I ordered an weaves myself through the rocks and branches. Louis was supporting Liam's weight with one shoulder and we were making good pace. I heard the howl come closer. Closer. Closer...

"Stop." I hissed, extending my arm to stop Niall from getting ahead of me.

"What's the hold up!?" Louis yelled.

"Shut up." I ordered sternly. I cautiously listened. The night air was still and quiet. Suspicious when the beasts were roaming the forest.

"Don't move." I whispered softly.

I saw two red eyes staring at us through the darkness and I could here the thud of heavy paws in the forest floor.

It sprang with a mighty roar.

"What the...!?" Liam shouted.

"Run!" I cried and darted to my left with Niall close behind. Louis practically tossed Liam to the ground beside an unusually thick bush and ordered Zayn to stay with him.

Louis and Harry didn't run though, they stayed out and began throwing rocks at the beast.

"What are you doing!?" I screamed, making a move to run towards them. Nil grabbed my hand and pulled me back.

"Let go! They're going to die!" I struggled against his strong grip.

"They're being fools." He whispered. "They will get what's coming to them."

I felt tears spring to my eyes and I buried my head in his chest so I didn't have to watch.

Louis hit the animal with a sharp stick, causing it retaliate by hitting him with it's giant claw. Louis flew back and hit a nearby tree, falling with a sickening thud.

"LOUIS!" Harry cried out hoarsely. "No!"

The beast paused an went over to sniff Louis. It nuzzled him and his body rolled over limply.

"Get away from him!" Harry shouted.

"Wait!" I paused and watched the creature give one last roar of triumph before darting away.

"It's reporting to Sofia. They'll know we're here." My heart was pounding. I'll be caught! Niall will die!

I looked over and saw Harry kneeling beside Louis. "Please..." His voice was shaky. "Don't leave me!"

Niall left my side and approached slowly with Zayn and Liam.

"No... It can't be." Li shook his head.

Harry let out a wail and buried his head in Liam's shoulder. "It should be me."

"Don't say that!" Niall gasped and put a hand on his shoulder. "He died protecting us."

I walked over and looked at the lifeless body before me, a claw mark stretching across his body. "I am... Sorry."

"I don't need your sympathy," Harry whispered quietly.

"We have to go..." I began.

"And leave him!? His dead body!? My best friend!" Harry got up and advanced on me. "We should have stayed!"

"Then you would all be DEAD!" I screamed at him. They all seemed taken aback that I'd used that to e but I spun on my heel and began to walk away.

"Join me to go to safety if you wish, or die like Louis."

Niall followed me and Zayn helped Liam along to follow too.

"So you're going to leave him!?" Harry cried. "We're band mates!"

"I won't let him die in vain." Liam looked back. "I'm going to fight."

Harry looked down at Louis body and pressed his forehead against his. "I'm sorry I couldn't save you."

He got up and walked towards us, his head hanging sadly.

Niall patted him on the back and we left the clearing.
