Chapter 6

Chapter 6:

Renee's POV:

I honestly don't understand Maddie at all. She's playing with them...

"Hey Renee!" Tia jogged up to me. "Want to take patrol of the border tonight?"

"Uh... Sure." All I really wanted was sleep, but I guess that could wait...

I was walking along the edge of the woods. The dark sky making it impossible to see. Not a good night for patrol duty. I sat on a large rock that jutted out from the edge of the woods. The stars shone brightly in the sky and a full moon greeted me warmly. I thought I heard a rustling of leaves. I turned and saw nothing. I assumed it was a squirrel or something, so I turned back around. I heard it again. Closer this time. I whirled around and saw the faint outline of a person moving towards me.

"Who... Who are you!?" I cried out.

"Don't yell! Please!" The Irish accent notified me it was Niall.

A part of me told me to run and get Maddie, but I didn't. I hopped off the rock and faced him.

"What are you doing here!? You could be killed!" I hissed at him.

"It's not by choice." Niall sighed. "Liam can't walk. So we're stuck here."

I felt my stomach drop. They were dead.

"We found a cave deep in these woods." He continued. "We have to stay until he can travel again."

I felt my heart pounding in my chest.

"You can't stay." I growled.

A look of hurt crossed Niall's face. "You're the kind one. I thought you could help us..."

I felt my cheeks warm and looked away so as not to send signals.

"I can't. That'd be going against Maddie."

"You're no better then her then." Niall looked down, disappointment on his face.

I felt panick rise in my throat. I wasn't a killer! I had to prove him wrong. Wait? Why did I have to prove anything to him? He was the enemy!

"I'll help you!" I blurted out suddenly, surprising both of us. I quited, "What can I do?"

I saw Niall smile a little and he nodded. "Come here tommorow night with supplies to patch up a broken leg."

I nodded reluctantly. "Now go back. Maddie..."

But he was already running off, hopping over fallen branches and dodging live ones. "Thanks!" He called.

"Welcome." I called back shyly.
