25 - Forgiveness

He learned that forgiveness is something that not everybody deserves. He learned that forgiving someone takes time, sometimes a lot of time. He knew he fucked things up big time with a lot of people. Somewhere in his head, a voice was telling him to run and take the first plane to Europe and start a life there. But he had to stop running from his problems because sooner or later they would catch up on him. 

He knew that there was a chance Maya would run away from him. Or that she would fight him or maybe she would cry. He didn't expect her to be frozen and just stare at him. She tried shaking her head, as if she didn't believe it was him. Her eyes were cold but something was making her eyes go soft again. He didn't expect her to run in his arms and forgive him for leaving and letting her deal with everything on her own. He was and still is her husband. He never wanted to cause more damage than he had already done.

Maya was so much more and she didn't deserve to be treated the way he had treated her the past years. He just left without saying goodbye and that was the only thing Maya feared more than anything The fear of leaving. He stood there as he watched Maya fall to the ground and burst out into tears. Her porcelain cheeks were stained and hair stuck to her wet cheeks. She didn't even bother picking herself up and acting normal in front of all the people there. Nor did Lucas want her to do that. 

He sat down in the grass beside her. He pulled her into an embrace as she silently sobbed. Her hair was cut short which he didn't know. She had her glasses on and wore more 'mom' styled clothes instead of the clothes she wore before everything happened. He never cared how she looked or what she wore because Lucas thought she looked stunning in everything. 

He stroked her arm and breathed in her perfume. After a while her sobs faded away with the wind and it was like as if the wind had stolen Lucas' courage just then and there. He couldn't bring out a word, he couldn't even bring himself to say hi. So Maya took his hands in hers.

He can't recall what happened that day. He didn't know that they desired each other so much and he didn't expect Maya to let him off the hook that easy but in that moment he didn't care. He saved the sweet moment in his mind. Maya fell asleep in his safe arms and for the first time in a long time she felt safe again. 

Lucas didn't know what he would tell people when he came back. He didn't know how he would explain his children that their dad didn't actually die. He was absolutely clueless and he hated the feeling. He looked around the room and found that it was empty and no sign of Maya what-so-ever. His feet carried him downstairs were she sat skyping with her mom. He could see her face light up as he heard two children's voices tell Maya about their day. That's when it struck him, she was talking to Haley and Hazel. They were turning three this year and it struck him that he missed half of their lives. 

Maya glanced at him briefly and smiled softly as she said goodbye to the pair and thanked her mom for calling. She ended the skype call and closed the laptop as she padded the empty spot next to her. He sat down and released a breath he didn't know he was holding. "Were that -?" "The girls, yeah they do ask about you. Olivia and Connor tell them about you." Maya said as she twisted her ring around her finger. "Can I ask you something?" She said after awhile. 

"S-sure," Lucas didn't know why he feared whatever would follow. He didn't even know what she was going to ask, but still he couldn't stop thinking that after everything something bad would happen again. "What did we do wrong to make you leave us like that?" It stayed quiet on his side. He couldn't explain why he did that. Sure he didn't leave Maya because he didn't love her anymore but still the way he left her wasn't exactly the best way either. He sighed and found Maya looking at her lap.
