I tossed and turned as I tried to fall into a hopefully peaceful sleep. I couldn't help but think. Think about the beach. What Sage had said and did. I mainly thought about this whole thing. It was fun at times, if I think optimistically about it. It was better when we just hanged out at home. We just played games and had simple good fun. I wanted it to be like that again. I didn't like how Sage treat Jack here. I didn't like how Sage had changed here. I wanted him to be the same person he was before. Suddenly I felt exhausted. My eyes wouldn't stay open and I was quickly falling asleep. Just before I fell into a deep sleep I thought about what Sage had said at the beach. "Was the person that gave you it just nothing to you? Are they just gone?"
My family lived on a small private beach in a average sized brick house. We were the only ones allowed onto that beach. We owned it. The house was fun for a small kid like me. I would run around the house exploring every inch of it. I liked to pretend I was a detective. My room was big. I always woke up in a bed way to big for me and a slight breeze from the fan above me. I loved it there and I hoped we would never have to move.
One day, my parents and me went to the beach as we did every day. I always wore my favorite flower print bikini. My parents always brought beach towels, a ball, and goggles along with us. My toes would sink into the sand as soon as I stepped of the steps of the house. The sun beat down on my face as we walked to the ocean. The water was cold on my toes as I waited for my mom to apply sunscreen to my face and shoulders. She was slow. To slow for a kid with a two second attention span. Before she finish I ran away and started to giggle. "Get back over here (Name)," she called for me. I just ignored her and keep running. Until I ran into something. I fell backwards and landed on my butt. "Hey!!!" A voice yelled at me. I looked up and was faced by a short boy with pale blonde hair. It was so pale it was basically white. "Do you want go start a fight? I'll fight you! I don't care if you're a girl." He put his fist on his hips. I got up and started to laugh at him. "You're so short!" I pointed out how I was at least an inch taller then him. His face turned a bright red and he crossed his arms. "One day I'll be taller then you!" He kicked sand in my face. My parents run up to me. My father picked me up. "Excuse me but this is a private beach," my mother talked to the boy's parents. They apologized and said they didn't know. The boy and his family started to walk away. I looked at my dad. "Can we let them stay? I don't have anyone else to play with." I told him. He frowned and looked at mom. He shrugged and she sighed. She told them to come back and the boy seemed happy as he smiled at me.
My father put me back down and went back to his beach towel. "Do you want to beat me up now?" I smirked already knowing the answer. He shook his head as he started to blush again. "What's your name?" I asked. "Sage," he answered solemnly. I nudged his shoulder with my elbow. He smiled a little. I grabbed his wrist and pulled him away into the ocean. Sage looked scared to swim, let alone touch the water, so I playfully pushed him into the water. After that we ran around the whole beach. We had become best friends instantly. The moon was already out before our parents made us split ways. We both protested but went our separate ways. I went to sleep think about all the fun stuff we could do tomorrow.Sage and me had been playing at the beach for about a week now. We talked to each other everyday. His parents even let him spend the night once. One afternoon while we were at the beach, disaster struck. Sage was pushing me around while we were swimming in the ocean. "Come on! Let's go father out!" Sage tried to pull me farther. "I can't. I can't swim to good and my mom told me to not go any further than right here." I frowned. "Don't be such a buzz kill (Name)!" He laughed. I glanced back at my parents. My mom had went back into the house and my dad was reading his book. "Let's go," I said sternly. He grinned and we threaded through the deep waters. Soon the water was up to my chest. Then my neck. Them my feet did touch the sandy beach floor anymore. I panicked. I started going under and water flooded my mouth. I couldn't scream for help. Sage was there thankfully. He started to scream and yell for help. I was completely submerged under the water. My father noticed and ran into the ocean. Soon my mother came out too. My dad carried me out of the water and my mother called 911.
After the "incident", my mother blamed it all on my father for not watching me like he was suppose to be. They decided they would divorce just because of it. My mother found a new house quickly and planed for us to leave in the next day. She gave me one final day at the beach with Sage. I was sad but I hid it for him. We were building a sand castle in complete silence. Neither of us knew what to say. I could tell he felt bad for what he had done. It wasn't his fault though. We had gathered shells and other objects we had found on the beach to decorate the castle. "Sage, Im leaving tomorrow. We'll never see each other again." I said sadly. He looked down and I noticed he was crying. I gave him a hug to comfort him. "You're my best friend," he sobbed. I felt horrible. "Why don't we give each other something to remember each other by?" I suggest. "Then we'll remember each other and maybe I see you again." I held his hand. He nodded. I didn't have anything though. Nothing good at least. "What should I give you?" I asked him. He blushed. "A-A kiss?" He giggled slightly. I knew he was joking but I quickly kissed his cheek. His face looked like a tomato. "I wasn't serious!" He yelled. I shrugged. "What are you going to give me?" I smiled. He starred down at his hands. A single she'll laid in them. He held it out to me. My mother came outside and yelled for me to come back. We both stood up and frowned. He took my hand and placed the shell in it. "I'll see you again." He said as I left forever.
"Sage!!!" I screamed as I jumped out of bed. He came running into the room. He seemed scared. "What's wrong!?" He hugged me as if he protecting me from something. "I remember who gave me the shell." I whispered. He sat down on the bed beside me. "Really?" I asked to make sure. I nodded and we suddenly were holding each other's hand. "Well I guess you know what you gave me?" I leaned closer to my face. I was about to answer him but he kissed me. "I told you we'd see each other again."
