“there's nothing worse than meeting the perfect person at the wrong time.”

Evangeline

When the Jacobs' sisters got to Lena's house, she told them to sit at the two seats at the end of the table. "Welcome to the house." Lena spoke, getting out salad and plates. "Mariana! Jesus! Dinner!"

"Coming!" A boy's voice called. The kids were a boy and a girl. Maybe a year younger than Callie, making them two years younger than Evan. Callie and Evangeline were both sixteen, but the older sister's seventeenth birthday was in a few weeks. Mariana was beautiful. Her dark hair pulled into a ponytail, hoop earrings in her ears, and a turquoise blue blouse. Evangeline actually thought Jesus was kinda cute. He had dark brown hair, a gray tee-shirt, and a weird necklace. She knew she couldn't like him. Callie liked one of their old foster brothers and it didn't work out well for them after that.

"Jesus and Mariana were foster kids too. We fostered them eight years ago and we adopted them five years ago." Lena helped her kids set up the table. "The foster system is crap." Jesus looked at Evan and smiled. She stared back, blankly. "Jesus..." Lena scolded. "It's true." Mariana agreed.

Callie looked around the house like she always did. Being the younger sister by one year meant she was always trying to get Evangeline to see her as older than she actually was. She always looked for one thing; a phone. Both of the girls looked for phones to contact Jude or someone else if he was with them.

"Alright, guys. Chill out." Lena stopped them. "What happened?" Jesus pointed to their faces. "Did you start a fight?" Jesus smiled at Evan again and she kept a straight face. "They've had a rough day. Let's save the interrogation for another time." Lena crossed her arms at Jesus.

"I- Um... where's the bathroom?" Callie spoke up, stuttering. "Mariana. Would you?" Mariana listened to her mother and showed Callie to the bathroom. Jesus sat in the seat next to Evan that wasn't Callie's. "Welcome to the family."

Mariana came back from the bathroom and sat on the other side of Jesus. "So... I was calling to see if we could make a meeting with your birth mom." Lena looked at Jesus and Mariana. Jesus looked at Mariana and she looked down, kind of upset.

"I was kinda hoping you'd be more excited." Lena awkwardly smiled. "I know." Mariana looked up. "I just don't think I wanna meet her anymore."

"Just because Jesus doesn't wanna go doesn't mean-"

"Don't look at me." Jesus cut Lena off. "No. Jesus wouldn't. I just changed my mind." Mariana looked at Jesus. "Okay." Lena smiled. "Did you guys do your homework?" Lena pulled out a pan from the oven and set it on the table. "I did. I don't think someone else did though." Mariana pointed to Jesus from her new spot at the other end of the table. "Hey. I was gonna after we ate." Jesus lied. "Yeah right." Mariana scoffed, smiling.

"Hey guys. Who's this?" A boy who looked closer to the older girl's age came in the door. "This is Evangeline. Her and her sister, Callie, will be staying with us for a bit." Lena introduced. "Evan, this is Brandon."

"Hey." Brandon sat on the other side of Jesus.

"How were auditions?" Lena asked. "Good." Brandon said, sounding kinda upset. "I made finals." He smiled. "That's fantastic!" Lena celebrated. "Don't make a big deal." Brandon smiled, putting food on his plate. "Fine." Lena sat down, pretending to pout.

Callie walked out of the bathroom and sat next to her sister again. "You okay?" Evan whispered to her. She nodded. "This is Callie?" Brandon smiled. "That would be me." Callie said. "What about him?" Callie confused the others. "How'd you get him?"

"Brandon is my wife, Stefanie's, biological son from her first marriage." Lena explained. A blonde woman in a police uniform walked in the door. "Hey, Honey." She said. "Hi." Lena greeted. She walked up to Lena and kissed her. "Hi, babies!" She opened the fridge, grabbing a soda. Callie and Evan looked at them, surprised.

"What? No one told you our mom was a cop?" Jesus smiled. "That's why no boys wanna come over!" Mariana laughed. "It should stay that way." The cop joked.

"So, you're dykes?" Callie shocked the family. They'd only ever had straight foster families, so it was just something Callie said, speaking her mind. She would never try to offend someone in that way. She was a good human, despite all the anger. "They like to be called 'human', but yeah, they're gay." Jesus said, proudly. "And he's the real son." Callie pointed to Brandon.

"Lena..." The woman, who Evan assumed was Stefanie, spoke. "Who's this? I thought we were only keeping one." Those words always sent a pain in her chest. It normally meant they'd be sent back, either to juvie, or to another foster home. That's always how it went.
