Ch13
Finally, after what seemed like centuries, Cole and Elizabeth reached the front porch of Zack Summer's house. They couldn't go any farther in the cold weather so they decided to stop at the closest house. The streets were completely empty, they saw no one on there way to Zack's house. Snow was everywhere, and the cold was unimaginable.
Elizabeth wanted to take the first step to the porch, but she couldn't. Snow was packed on the porch, blocking the front door and the whole area around it, covering the floor with a thin layer of sleet.
"Great." Elizabeth said, breathing into her hands and rubbing them together, "What now?"
"I can't take another step in the snow." Cole said. He looked at the snow covering the door and mumbled, "Got a shovel?"
"I have my hands." she said.
He looked back at her, "Good enough." he smiled and bent down, scooping the snow away with his bare hands.
Elizabeth stuck her hands in her jacket pockets, the snow had to be freezing. At the same moment Cole pulled his hands away and shook them at his sides.
"It's like sticking your hands in a bucket of ice." he said, but he continued to scoop more snow away from the door.
"Cole, just stop." Elizabeth said, "Your fingers will fall off."
Cole ignored her and dug with his fingers into the dirty snow. Suddenly he jumped up and rubbed his hands together, mumbling under his breath, "Cold cold cold." and when his hands didn't warm up, he turned towards Elizabeth and put them in her jacket pockets with her hands.
Elizabeth flinched when his hands brushed against hers; they were so cold.
"What's wrong with your pockets?" Elizabeth said eyeing his jacket's pockets.
Cole smiled, "They're not as warm."
Elizabeth blushed. Then she held Cole's cold hands in her warm ones in the pockets. She didn't realize what she had done until she felt the jarring shock of electricity and cold when Coles' fingers intertwined with hers and spread through her body, making her heartbeat speed up.
They stood there for a while, staring into each others eyes, their breaths white in the frosty air.
A cold wind blew, pricking Elizabeth's neck through her hair and waking her up. She pulled Cole's hands away and smiled, "Just keep working on the iceberg."
He smiled, his blue eyes almost looked grey in the dim light. He turned toward the big blob of snow and kicked it, "I hate snow."A small ball of snow rolled off the top and fell to the bottom.
"So we keep walking?" Elizabeth asked.
"Yeah, I-" suddenly a loud bang sounded from the other side of the door, making Elizabeth jump.
Cole spun around to face the door.
"What in the world..." Elizabeth murmured.
"I guess that's our friends on the other side. They're stuck in, the snow blocked their way out-as you can see," he nodded at the snow, "Now they're busting their way out."
"Meanwhile, we're trying to get in." Elizabeth said.
They stood quietly side by side as someone banged on the door again and again. After a few more pushes the door cracked open.
"Anyone there?" a voice called out. It sounded like Zack Summer.
"Yeah, it's us Cole and Elizabeth." Cole replied, stepping closer to the door.
