Ch35

Elizabeth could put up with anything. She could swim for miles, walk for miles, stay awake for the whole night, pretend to be happy, stay without food or water for a whole day, and keep a secret.

But that's what broke her. She could barely stand anymore, she was so tired. And all she could think of was: It's all my fault.

She wished she could go back in time. She wished she had a car. She wished she didn't have to feel the pain she felt now. And above all-maybe it was the pain talking or the stress, but-she wished she hadn't met Cole.

She suddenly fell on the sidewalk, realizing she was completely lost. She didn't remember the street she was on. She must've looked like a mess.

She had stopped crying, but was completely dehydrated. She wanted to go him so badly.

Suddenly a sleek black car with black windows that Elizabeth could see her reflection in slowly pulled up to the curb in front of her.

She looked up and was a bit afraid of her reflection. Her hair was a mess, eyes puffy, face red, and her clothes were wrinkled. She untied her hair and tied it again neatly and stood up as the front window rolled down.

Elizabeth looked inside and saw Lacy sitting in the driver's seat, smiling at her.

"Well, you look worse than you usually do." Lacy tossed her long blond hair behind her back.

Elizabeth rolled her eyes and began to walk away. She couldn't deal with her now.

"Wait!" Lacy called. Elizabeth stopped and waited as Lacy drove her car forward until it was next to Elizabeth again.

"You look lost." Lacy said. Elizabeth looked at her again. The smile was gone and her brown eyes looked innocent. "You need a ride?" Lacy asked.

Elizabeth didn't hesitate for long. It was her only choice. She sat next to Lacy and said, "Take me home please."

Elizabeth knew Lacy knew where she lived because last year they had to do a class project together and they went to Elizabeth's house to do it. Lacy didn't ask what was wrong and Elizabeth was grateful for that. She didn't know if she could explain without falling apart again. There was silence in the car for the first few minutes and Elizabeth was too tired to even wonder why Lacy was helping her.

Then Lacy spoke up as she pulled onto a road that looked familiar to Elizabeth. "I took your advice." she said.

Elizabeth first thought that Lacy was joking about her giving her any advice. Then she remembered the time they met in the cake shop when she told Lacy that she should stand up to Dixon. It seemed like years ago.

"Ya...?" Elizabeth mumbled.

Lacy chuckled, "I think there's still a red mark of my hand on his cheek."

Elizabeth looked up at her in surprise. "You hit him?"

"Hard as hell." Lacy smiled. Her eyes were on the road, but Elizabeth could see them sparkle. Lacy sat a bit straighter.

"What did he tell you?" Elizabeth asked.

"He cursed me as usual. I was about to let it go, but then I remembered you." she stole a glance at Elizabeth, "So I guess I have to thank you now. After I slapped him, he couldn't find any words to say. So I left him to think about his choices."

"Choices?"

"He can either stop talking to me like I'm nobody and we can keep being friends, or he can suffer from another slap and stay miles away from me for the rest of his life." Lacy replied.
