Chapter 18
When all three of us got to the back door of the house the sun had completely set. I stumbled and almost tripped many a time. Luckily Josh caught me and steadied me each time or I would have been pretty scraped up. I'm so clumsy but for once I didn't mind due to the moments of contact I gained with him.
I turned to Josh once we had all entered the house and gently grabbed Shay's arm so that she wouldn't leave yet.
"I'm going to walk Shay home." Josh looked at me incredously .
"It is pitch black outside and she lives three miles away from here." His eyes scanned my face.
"All the more reason she shouldn't go alone!" I stood there stubbornly and met his gaze. I wasn't backing down. I needed a good walk. Shay and I used to do it all the time and I missed that terribly.
His voice turned almost whiney, "Why cant we just call her a cab??"
"You know just as well as I do that the cab drivers at this time of night are sketchy." No way was I letting her get in a cab alone with a stranger.
His resolve disappeared as he saw he had no more excuses. "Fine. But since I'm not letting YOU walk back alone here is fifty dollars," I took the money and stashed it away in my pocket, "Catch a bus back. Assuming you'll get there in about four hours the night buses will be running by then. At least other people will be on the bus."
"Awesome! Don't worry! I'll be back in about five hours tops! If not... well.... A thief got me." I joked this last part at him.
"That is so not funny!" Shay and I then ran out of there laughing before he had a chance to change his mind.
Little did I know how ironic my "joke" had been.
