Olivia woke up the next morning with fading memories and an empty spot beside her. Struggling to adjust to the daylight from the window which was slung open, Olivia moved her arm to feel the spot beside her in case Courtney was just hiding under the blankets. Nope, it was empty. However she didn't fret. She listened to the rain from the window and the strumming from the floor.
She heard Courtney hum as she played different chords. Olivia listened and pulled the blanket closer up as it was chilly from the window.
"Everybody finds somebody someplace. There's no telling where love may appear. Something in my heart keeps saying, my someplace, is here."
Courtney pulled her fingers away from the strings and just, let it fade away.
"Everybody loves somebody, sometimes," Courtney sang finally. She sighed. It left Olivia to wonder.
"Do you love somebody?" Olivia asked out, announcing her consiousness. It almost startled Courtney into screaming. She caught herself however.
"Liv? Did I wake you?" Courtney said instead. She stood up and closed the window. Olivia pulled the blanket down just enough to see Courtney in her actions. The blonde looked over and smiled, with a flicker of sadness. Olivia didn't miss it.
"Not at all. It's calming to wake up to a voice of music. In all honesty, you sing really well." Courtney walked over and kneeled in front of Olivia.
"Last night a blur to you?" She asked.
Olivia inhaled and thought.
"Not really, I remember all of it. Unless something happened?"
"No, you said you felt sick last night. Do you feel okay now? Just hungover?" Courtney motioned to a cup of water that she brought up previously when she awoke herself.
"Nah, drunk me probably just wanted some cuddles from the Bae. Did we do anything? I don't recall much here," Olivia said, turning her head to face Courtney.
"Really?" Courtney almost looked relieved. She was thinking that maybe her little story was a bit too much. She was glad Olivia won't remember any of it.
"What happened? Did we do something? Did we kiss again? I'm sorry, I promised I wouldn't do that agai-"
"No Liv, we didn't do anything," Courtney chuckled. She stood up once again and went to put her ukulele back where it was. "Why won't you kiss me huh? Am I not good?" Courtney teased as she grabbed her instrument.
"What was that? Sorry, I didn't hear you," Olivia uttered. She was staring at Courtney fully as she wore a snug tank top. That and loose fitting pajama pants. Olivia might've been ogling as the girl bent over to grab the ukulele to place in her closet.
Courtney chuckled as she turned back around. "Am I not a good kisser?" Courtney asked again, her voice getting firm. When she looked at Olivia, she unintentionally thought of how adorable she looked, wrapped in her blanket. She held the edges up to her neck, staring, almost innocently to Courtney. Mesmerized, the blonde seemed to stop for a moment.
"I didn't say you weren't a good kisser or anything, it's just that we're both seeing people and it's not really...A good idea to be doing that stuff right?" Olivia discarded her previous thoughts. Her last visit here seemed to remind her not to let anything take over her mind.
"Sure. But I'm a good kisser?" Courtney grinned.
"Oof, I haven't had much experience with kissing, but you're great," Olivia said jokingly.
She leaned over to the cup of water and took plenty of gulps. She plopped back down.
"I feel like...Not the greatest. Would your sister mind if I stayed here while you're gone?"
"Sure, she's not even here. Gonna wait here while I talk to...SHIT!" Courtney rushed to her spot on the bed and grabbed her phone.Olivia connected the dots.
"Jess?" She asked sheepishly.
"Fuck, fuck, fuck. We left her there at the party. Damned shit! She either passed out or," Courtney got distracted as she texted quickly. Olivia watched her as she was kneeled on the bed beside her.
"Did she try texting?" Olivia asked.
"No. I'll text Ian as well, see if she'd passed out there."About 10 minutes later Courtney grunted. Alerting Olivia, pulling her attention away from her own phone.
"Would you mind if I went out to talk to her right now? She seems eerily calm about the matter and wants to meet up not too far. I've also got to pick up my car. You can help yourself to the kitchen and have cereal or something," Courtney explained as she went to her closet to grab clothes.
"I'll be fine. I'm probably just going to sleep again," Olivia replied. She closed her eyes and got a bit comfortable."Jess?" Courtney called. She entered the chain restaurant and easily spotted Jess at a table. The place was near empty except for a family at the other end of the building. Jess looked like a mess having trouble to tame itself. It made Courtney feel a bit guilty.
"Finally decided to show up, huh baby?" Jess said spitefully as Courtney sat down.
"I deserve that don't I?"
"You left me at a place, a party full of people I don't even know!"
"I'm sorry Jess, but you didn't get hurt did you?"
"No I didn't get hurt. Luckily too. I thought we were gonna go back to my place afterwards. I didn't even get to meet your friends all that well. What's her name, Olivia? I wanted to talk to her. But you left me alone and I didn't know where you were or if you were coming back. You didn't."
"Why do you want to talk to O-My friends?"
Her question made Jess laugh bitterly. "Talk to your girlfriend? Olivia? Looks like you're still the predictable Courtney I knew back at Sherman."
"She's not my girlfriend, Jessica. You are-"
"No- We are not anything," Jess intercepted. "We are not girlfriends Courtney. We're not dating. That's not what we're doing. This isn't Sherman Oaks. This isn't the way it used to be. We're not exclusive."
Courtney felt a bit hurt. A bit hurt and a bit surprised.
"The only good thing from last night is I met someone who did take me home. Courtney..." her tone finally softened a bit. "I think I'm going to stick with guys for a while. Girls are... hard to deal with."
"You met a guy again?""Courtney, I never thought I'd ever know you long enough to say this...But let's just be friends. Truce?"
Olivia scrolled through her phone when the bedroom door opened. She looked up, surprised and confused to see Courtney back already. Her expression made Olivia, feel mixed emotions.
"Is everything okay?" Olivia asked as she sat up. She saw Courtney clearly now. Her eyes were sort of red and she looked quite distressed. "Oh Courtney, don't tell me."
"We weren't anything serious. I don't know why I'm like this," Courtney said as she went to her desk to plug her phone in.
"You broke up?"
"What was there to break up?" Courtney didn't care about the clothes she had on as she crashed into the bed beside Olivia. "I don't feel good. Cuddle me?"
"Of course."Truthfully, Courtney was upset for another reason. It was never really about Jess anymore so much as that she's there for Courtney to forget. Forget about her feelings for Olivia and now she's left to let them grow without someone to get her mind off of that.
"Can you tell me a story?" Courtney whispered to Olivia, who was behind her, with her arm around Courtney.
"A story?" Olivia whispered back.
"Yeah, I told you one last night about a party and a group of friends. Can you tell me one?"
"What do you want to hear about?"
"Just your voice. Just talk. Please?"
"Yeah, yeah. Umm, this is a story about three boys, and a girl. They were a group of best friends and they hung out every day at school. Things were calm... Things were okay. Maybe they were boring because now that I think about it, we - they didn't do much. Well, then she came along."
Courtney listened. It seemed like she was telling a true story as well.
"Things at school got more, exciting. More eventful at least. Like when she even showed up, things got different in general. Better maybe."
Courtney closed her eyes. She brushed Olivia's arm before turning around to face her. She got comfortable, leaning her head against Olivia's chest to hear her heartbeat.
"I don't know how to end this story because it hasn't ended," Olivia said, tapping Courtney's shoulder. Except the girl was intent on her heartbeat.
"You have to trust me on something. You know how the boys are still keeping a secret from us? " Courtney said, almost worriedly.
"Yeah?"
Courtney didn't reply. She didn't know how to continue. She bit her lip and tried to think.
"Trust you with what?"
"Just trust... That I will tell you the secret before the boys. D-Don't ask them about it. I'll tell you first," she said. She sighed.
"Is everything okay?"
"I'll be okay."
"Do you know their secret?" Olivia whispered.
"With everything I am. But I can't tell you. I understand why they didn't want to tell us. Do you trust me?"Olivia thought for a second. "Yeah."
"Good. I trust you too. Thank you for cuddling me."
Courtney still listened to her heartbeat. She listened to it speed up notably.
