Mae's pov
"We have to get higher up the mountain. Food is running scarce." I said looking to mom.
"We are almost out of gas in the car and you know he can't climb well." She whispered gesturing over to grandpa.
I look over to my grandpa. He was everything to me. The only father I ever had. I knew she was right, but if we stay here then we'll starve. I looked around,
"We'll go as far up as we can till we run out of gas then we'll walk. We will stop as much as we have to so he can rest, if we stay here we'll starve."
"It's a good plan." Grandpa said.
We both jumped. We didn't know he was listening.
"I'm not going to hold you two back. We go with Mae's plan." He said.
I smiled at grandpa and mom nodded and went to start packing. I ran up and hugged my grandpa.
"You listen to me Mae. If that time ever comes when I am holding you back or something happens, I want you to go and get your mom out of there." He said.
I looked up at him,"nothing is ever going to happen. I won't let it. I will never leave you."
He smiled and laughed,"my granddaughter. my strong, stubborn, beautiful granddaughter."
"I get it from my grandpa." I smiled.
He hugged me again and whispered,"you're dad was an idiot."
I flinched at the thought of my dad. Shaking the thoughts out of my head, I took in the warmth and the smell of woods and the hint of cologne he still wore. The comfort I always got from this man compared to no other. I pulled away and asked,
"how are you doing on insulin?"
"I've got enough. Don't worry bout me bud" he smiled and placed a reassuring hand on my shoulder.
"You sure? I could always make a run into town before we get going" I said.
I'm fine, I'm going to go help your mother" he said while walking off towards mom to pack.
