Mae's pov
Grandpa had left my side minutes after we found her body, but I knew someone was still there and I knew exactly who it was. She's gone. She was here just this morning and now....she's gone. She's always been gone. She was never there, she always left. she always left me with him! She was the reason! My whole body was shaking as I was on my knees looking at the body on the ground. Her once tan skin turned white as snow. Her skin cold as ice and her blue eyes forever closed, never to open again. She came after me. The ONE time she actually came back for me and she dies! Go figure! After a few more minutes I heard footsteps and I suddenly became unable to control my mouth,
"It was my dad"
I heard his footsteps stop and I glanced out of the side of my eyes and saw the man with the crossbow turn back towards me. Turning back at what use to be my mom a tear fell down my cheek and I started to chuckle,
"The last conversation I had with her I was blaming her. I was blaming her for things my dad did." I sniffed wiping away more tears,"her being dead should be no different right? She always left. She was always gone! She left me alone with him!"
More tears fell down my cheek and this time I let them. A mix of anger and depression encircled inside me as I starred at her body. I didn't know why I was telling him all this, but it was like I couldn't control anything I was saying,
"She left me at home to get hit! To get burned! To get drugged! Even to be his friends little play toy..when....when..." I started shaking harder and that's when I heard footsteps getting closer to me and a raspy voice,
"Hey" I felt numb as he sat beside me,"ya don't have to.."
"While she left and went to places like the Bahamas, Florida, Paris...I was at home wishing I was dead! She swore up and down she didn't know and once she found out, she left the son of a bitch." I choked out grabbing my moms cold, lifeless hand.
Daryl didn't say anything as I gripped onto my knife that i had in my belt and pulled it out. As my breathing heavies, i gripped even harder onto the knife,
"The last things I said to her were things I had bottled up for years and they finally spilled out. I wasn't expecting it to be the last thing she ever heard" I whispered and raised my shaking hand with the knife in it.
I tried to calm my breathing down as I whispered, "I'm sorry" and I plunged the knife through my mother's head.
As I heard the cracking noise that I knew meant I hit my target, I pulled the knife out of her head and just starred. I wanted to scream. More than I've ever wanted to scream in my life. Daryl still had said nothing, but I felt his eyes on me every second of what I said. Gulping down the scream I had in my throat, I stood up completely numb and walked away. Now there were 3 other people that knew what happened in my past. I started walking back to the group and I noticed officer grimes taking Jim inside the rv. Arching my eyebrow I walked over to T,
"What happened?"
He sighed,"Jim's been bit and Amy's dead"
My eyes found their way over to where Andrea now sat over Amy's body, much like how I was by my mothers. I nodded and I heard T sigh,"hey?"
Looking at T with my arms wrapped around myself he said,"sorry bout your mom"
I nodded in thanks to him and walked over to the camp by grandpa. He was just sitting on a log starring down at the fire. He seemed more pale, but I guess it's just cause he lost his daughter. Sitting next to him, I rested my head on his shoulder as we watched the group decide what to do next. About an hour later officer grimes walked into our camp,
"We're gonna head for the CDC."
Lifting my head off of my grandpa's shoulder and nodded.
"We have enough room in the car for one of you, the other can ride in the rv." He said.
I looked at my grandpa and seen he wasn't gonna make a move or a sound so I faked a smile at officer grimes and said,
"Thank you"
He nodded and sighed,"you sure you two are alright?"
"As alright as we can be" I said.
He nodded and walked back over to his car as I stood up and helped grandpa to his feet. As I pulled him up, I noticed he was lighter, more thinner than before. Not saying anything I led him to the rv and say him down in the passenger seat. I knew him and dale were friends so I was kinda hoping dale could help more than I could. As I closed the rv door and started to make my way over to officer grimes, I was stopped by someone grabbing my arm. Jumping, I quickly turned as the arm retracted immediately and daryl stood before me. I starred at him wide eyes calming my breathing as he said,
"Yer riding with me"
He didn't give me a chance to say anything as he started walking back to his truck. I watched him and then turned back to the grimes car where officer grimes looked over at me and arched an eyebrow. I shrugged, but turned and followed behind daryl. Opening the door to his rusty blue pick up truck, I sat in the passenger seat as daryl got in the drivers. As the cars started to role out I just starred out the window feeling completely numb.
"I buried her" daryl said.
Turning my eyes back towards the redneck as his eyes left the road towards mine,
"Yer mom...I buried her" he said and turned back towards the road.
I was both shocked and thankful that he did that. Nodding, I turned back to the window and watched the place we called home for a while disappear and for the first time the shoe was on the opposite foot, I was leaving my mom.
