Sapphire sighed, sitting alone on her bed. It was always so lonely in her large sanctuary. Loneliness meant quietness.

Sapphire heard that too often.

Quiet.

It bothered her slightly. The quietness stuck to her. She didn't talk much. Sapphire wasn't necessarily shy. Just quiet. Gems get that confused way too often.

A small, three-second, melody echoed throughout the house. Sapphire stood up, patting down her blue, poofy dress. She lifted her dress a bit with both hands to make it a bit easier to walk. She headed towards the door.

She used her future vision to see who it was. It was just Pearl, one of Sapphire's few close friends. The thing that worried her was that Pearl was by herself. Pearl could get in trouble like that. Sapphire didn't hesitate to open the door.

Pearl was talking to a short amethyst guard at Sapphire's front door. Sapphires were important to Homeworld. They have been told they must be protected due to their small, fragile forms and important powers. Many of Sapphire's friends have been suggesting she gets herself a ruby guard or at least a Pearl, but she wasn't interested in having one.

Pearl slipped inside of Sapphire's sanctuary once she noticed the door was open. Amethyst closed the door behind her.

"Hello Pearl," Sapphire greeted. "What brings you here?"

"Oh, nothing. Rose left for another Earth mission and I just got done cleaning her sanctuary. Since I have nothing to do, I decided to visit you," Pearl chirped.

"That's nice. It does get pretty lonely and quiet over here," said Sapphire.

Pearl tilted her head as she sat down on a loveseat, Sapphire trailing behind.

"Why don't you get a Ruby guard?" Pearl suggested. "You might enjoy her company."

Sapphire groaned, unexpectedly. "Pearl, everybody tells me that. I don't want to get another guard just so they can guard my door. You know I can't even talk to the amethysts outside," Sapphire surmised.

Pearl sighed and began to explain, "Rubies are different from quartz guards, you know? They aren't just guards. They are also servants. They are meant to follow you around, keep you away from harm, do everything you tell them to. It's their job. Some actually do it because they care about the gem they are working for. A ruby is loyal."

Sapphire thought about it for a second. She didn't like the idea of having a gem do everything for her or fight for her.

"Now, now, I know what you're thinking. Why don't you just do what Rose did? Rose took me in, pretending that she owned me. Really, I'm free, but still loyal! You know that." Pearl tried to reason with Sapphire.

Sapphire realized that Pearl did have a point. Maybe she would enjoy a rubies company. After all, she needed a break from the quietness that surrounded her sanctuary.

Pearl spoke again, "but if you are going to get a guard, please get a ruby. I'm the only pearl you need around here." Pearl placed a hand on her hip and flicked her hair up.

Sapphire giggled at Pearl's silliness.

Ruby was sleeping. Gems didn't need sleep, but it got rid of Ruby's stress and it relaxed her so she enjoyed it.

Her peaceful sleeping was interrupted by something soft that tickled her nose. Her eyes flew open but she was bombarded with pink fur.

"Lion, really?" Ruby smiled at the huge, pink lion hovering over her. She pushed his face away in a playful way.
