Copenhagen- Royal Jam Sandies
Met by 10000 fans the newspaper said and a rowdy bunch of fans they were indeed.
As we were finishing up quickly in reception a large group nearly broke through the main doors. After that ruckus, a quiet night was spent stuck in our rooms which consisted of 2, two bedroom apartment style rooms and a 1 bedroom for me, well it was for Brian, but tis mine now. The Royal Hotel was old but comfortable and we had a good nights' sleep once we got over the fact of thousands of girls were going to scream ALL night.
The lads rehearsed their set in the afternoon the following day, and I taped the setlist to their guitars to help them remember the running order. Mal Evans wow so tall and intimidating, I'd forgotten, but he opens his mouth and there he is. A loveable scourser from Liverpool.
"I've seen ya before the Beatles and Saville luv, but can't put ma finger on it" Mal taped the setlist to Georges guitar and glanced up at me again, watching me through his thick glasses, I sat opposite, cross legged helping, he searched his mind for an answer to his own question.
"Of course you have silly we were on the plane together" I know the answer ever since John warned me Mal was the Beatles Road Manager and the right hand man in all situations.
"Oi cheeky! Nope, something different bout ya"
"Yes Mal you know me as the girl Ted from the Cavern in Liverpool" I jokingly replied making light of employment and look while at the Cavern. Mal was the bouncer on the front door but occasionally brought me a drink to the storeroom during a shift at nights.
"Bloody crikey" Mal whooped then did a long low whistle.
"Mal sssshhhh! Yes that's how I know John and how, ultimately, I am in my current position"
"Well you turned out nice love much better than back in the day in those horrid Teddy clothes"
"Why thank-you sir, I do hope I am an improvement from then" I grinned as we got back to work.
Neil Aspinall wandered over. He was another nice welsh born fella but grew up and went to school with Paul and George, also a Road manager and personal assistant, he was a God-send for my lack of knowledge with the tour. " 'urry up you two, no slacking off. Mush Mush"
"Ok your highness - there done!" Mal and I high fived then mocked a bow and scrape to Neil
"Oh I can see this is going to be like pulling teeth if you don't fall into line Rox!" Neil grinned while he spoke every word.
"All good Neil I was just off to sort tomorrows itinerary. I'll behave"
The Beatles performed two shows at the KB Hallen venue, at 6pm and 9.15pm, with 4,400 fans bearing witness at each. The setlist hovered mainly in the scrap paper's order and with a change here or there crossed out with Biro if needed.
Paul made sure we sent of a telegram to Richard in Hospital but we didn't hear back how he was doing.
"Didn't think we could miss you so much. STOP. Get well soon. STOP"
After the second show, we were treated to a local delicacy, smorrebrodsseddel, a type of jam sandwich. A few press stayed for drinks and I think George was trying to sneak out with Mal to get smokes but seeing the doors nearly caving in with fans he dashed back upstairs leaving Mal to the smoke run.
