Rest was a blessing even if I were able to get ten minutes of shut eye. Throughout the night I slept on and off to make sure no biters were gnawing on me, as well as making sure the brood man hadn't left his spot. I watched the moon as it passed over until the dawn of sunlight brightened up the earth. I knew it was time to get up when the birds began to chirp.I stood up slowly trying not to make the slightest noise and checked his camp. His chest slowly rose up and lowered as he napped peacefully. That's when I really had a chance to examine his face. He was so peaceful in his sleep— no scowl or frown to be seen. I smirked at the man and I took it as an opportunity. I watched my steps as I made my way to a small creek. Setting the bow to the side I took off my backpack. Pulling the filtered water bottle out I filled it up and took a sip of the cool liquid. I rinsed my hands off and splashed the refreshing water on my face making my skin feel somewhat cleaner. I let out a small moan and scrubbed my face and hands until the caked up blood and dirt disappeared.
"Don't move." A deep raspy voice startled me. I immediately froze. "Now put yer' hands behind yer' head."
I did as the man said and slowly raised my hands over my head.
"Are ya alone?" He asked stepping closer to me. His thick southern accent could be easily identified.
"I am." I said thinking of a strategy to escape. "By the looks of it you're not alone."
He didn't answer as he stood me up and patted me down to ensure I was clear of weapons. A little frustrated I asked a little harsher as I turned to face him, "How big is your group?"
"Why do ya care?" His blue eyes scanned mine while his crossbow was aimed at my head.
"Are there two men in your group that travel together?" I asked mentally crossing my fingers.
"Nope. Not one." He answered without hesitation.
"Fuck." I cursed under my breath. "I mean no harm. I'll be on my way."
"I don' trust ya!" He stepped closer.
"If I wanted to kill you I would have." I said amused. "I had many opportunities."
"I don' care bout that! I know yer' gonna follow me to my group and try stealin' from us."
"And why would I do that?"
"Don' make me shoot this arrow through that tiny skull of yers'!"
I rolled my eyes at him,"For having a tiny skull I sure do have a bigger brain than anyone else's since I've survived on my own for the past year and have journeyed across the entire state!"
He slightly looked impressed which took me by surprise. Who knew that the tough redneck could actually express more than one emotion.
"What's your name girly?"
"What's yours redneck?" I mocked.
"Yer' cute but it ain't gonna cut it out here!" He said before he hit me over the head with his crossbow knocking me out cold.
God knows how many hours I was out before my eyes started to flutter open. I squinted at the fire in front of me as I tried to reposition my back into a more comfortable spot. As I did this I realized I was tied up to the tree I leaned against last night. In my head I jokingly thought 'Long time no see?'
