Chapter 14: Secrets
Logan
I took the biggest deep breath as I stepped outside. The welcoming cool breeze opened my lungs and my senses after seeing those memories from Sam. He followed me silently as I walked to the same large tree where I would go every day to have a smoke.
I pressed my back into the bark, not caring if I got anything on my t-shirt. I slid the rose coloured case from my pocket and pulled the cigarette and lighter from it before placing the stick between my lips.
"So, when I shifted I got these...abilities." I said while lighting it and letting the smoke fill my lungs. I looked up at Sam and he stared at me surprised.
"No way? You actually got some?" He asked and I nodded while blowing out a cloud of smoke and I handed him the cigarette and he took it from my fingers while doing the same.
"A single touch can tell me about a persons life. Sometimes I get a lot of memories, sometimes I only get one." I explained as he handed the cigarette back to me and he looked out at the grass.
"Is that what happened when you touched my hand?" He asked and he turned to meet my gaze and I looked into his light eyes, he had a baby face and I suddenly had the urge to knock his old man out for how he treated him. It was an invasion of privacy - my ability and it...hurt me that I had seen his story without asking for permission.
"What did you see?" He asked but it sounded like he kind of knew the answer.
"You were...fourteen? Your father caught you." I said and Sam folded his arms over his lean body, his hands running over his skin and I stared at the bumps that prickled there.
"His name was Calum and we had been friends since kindergarten. We were freshmen in high school and doing homework and it just kind of happened. My dad was coming to ask us if we wanted a drive to lacrosse practice when he saw us. He told Calum he needed to leave and told me to go to my room." He began and I just listened while he took a shaky breath in.
"He came in and he hit me and said I was a disgrace. He hit me until I had a black eye and fat lip. I left that night and as you said once you leave you're declared rogue and your alpha parents won't look for you. So, I was placed into a foster home. This is the first foster home I have been taken in by. I miss the feeling of being in a home like that." He said and I nodded and scoffed while shaking my head.
"Trust me, I've been there. I have gotten kicked out of every foster home I have been in; usually for stealing, once for smoking," I chuckled and Sam smiled softly, "Although I got kicked out of every home I went to. I love living with Jake and Dean." I finished and Sam met my gaze and I felt the longing he had for a family and to avoid anymore emotions, I quickly tore my gaze away and focused on tapping out my cigarette.
"Did you feel something with Finn?" I asked changing the subject and Sam hesitated before nodding sadly.
"Sam..." I began. Damn it Logan, you're turning into a seer with your little tips of getting through shit. You should be letting people figure it out themselves. You had to.
"Your father isn't here. No one is here to hurt you. Don't be afraid." I said, ignoring the nagging thoughts in the back of my head and Sam looked at me, the sadness fading as he grinned at me.
"I just...I don't know. Why aren't you with Johnny?" He asked me and I reached up, scratching the back of my head while trying to find an appropriate answer.
"I don't believe in love. It's a weakness that I don't want to feel but I think I am slowly feeling it." I answered quietly while closing my eyes momentarily and Sam laughed dryly.
