Chase POV
My fingers drummed my desk ryhtmically, my eyes twitching from the teacher at the head of room who was struggling with the computer, to the door. Where was my little Enchantress? She was going to have to work extra training hours for this. I smiled to myself, thinking of my mischevious plan. And when she would finally get to class, I'll freak her out with some made-up thing about Enchantresses. I chuckled to myself, flicking away a piece of stray hair. It was funny when her lips pouted all puppy-like and her large technicolor eyes twinkled in astonishment when she discovered her elements.
Rachel was sitting behind me and let out a large sigh, as she leaned forward in her desk to teasingly twirl my hair around her fingers. She put her lips next to my ear and whispered, "Where's your little puppy dog?" She smiled, her red lips parting as she sat back into her seat.
I waited for the teacher to occupy himself and turned around. "That's exactly what I was wondering." I told her.
She rolled her eyes and crossed her arms over the low-cut tank she was wearing. My eyes drifted to her cleavage, but I was then completely turned off by her high pitch voice. "Your being really annoying." She sighed. "When will it be my turn to play with you?" She licked her lips.
As each second passed I became more impatient. Where was she? "See! Your not even listening to me!" She complained.
What is she was in trouble? What if they found out which one she was? What if she was already gone? Or even worse, what if she was with that new guy, Chris? I shuddered to myself and immitated his voice in my head. I'm Chris, I think I'm so hot, blah, blah. And the loser fell for it. Rachel lectured me while I thought of where that little booger could be.
"She's not even pretty. I don't see why you two ever dated. We are so much more...compatible. You get what I mean?"
Did this girl ever shut up?
"I guess what I'm saying is that I feel really comfortable around you."
I managed to smile at her. I hadn't realized my little affair was going to turn into a full-blown relationship. Pretty soon she would be calling me pet names. I shuddered and remembered how Val hated when I called her, "babe." I reminded myself to use that next time I saw her....But right now I was getting more furious at her as each minute droned on. I swear, if she's skipping class to be with her friends....
"Chase? Chase?" Rachel shooky my shoulder.
"Oh yeah, sorry." I stuttered.
"Are you going to say anything?" She stared at me incrediously.
"Um, yeah. I feel comfortable around you too." Nice save.
Her eyes widened and she leaned closer towards me. "What do you say, you and me go out tonight? Finish where we left off?" She tapped her finger along my neckline, trailing her polished nails up my neck.
That was when I heard her scream. It was muffled by the barrier of the classroom walls, but my distinct sense of hearing heard what my classmates didn't, my Enchantress was in danger. And I was the only one who could make her scream like that, not some low-life Lawless Pack member. I jumped up in my desk.
"Excuse me, where do you think your going?" The teacher asked. The entire class turned towards me, Rachel stared at me wide-eyed her mouth gaping open.
"I-I-" I stuttered trying to come up with a good enough excuse to leave.
"Sit down." The teacher pointed sternly to my chair, but I remained standing.
"I said, sit down." The teacher crossed his arms over his chest the entire class watched impatiently as I refused to obey him. "Do I need to assist you the principal's office or can you find it yourself?"
The entire class broke into obnoxious laughter that rattled the room. "Oooh!' They all echoed.
I grabbed my cellphone out of my pocket and held it up. "My Mom texted me, she says my Dad is in the hospital."
The teacher's gaze softened and his lips parted. "Oh." He murmered. "You're excused." Everyone turned back in their seats towards the blackboard. I smiled to myself, shoving the phone back in my pocket and grabbing my bag off the back of the chair.
"I'm sorry about your Dad." Rachel said, I gave her a polite smile as I shuffled out of the room and closed the door behind me.
The hallway was completely empty. It had an eerie feeling to it. I dropped my bag and flung it at a column of lockers. "Valerie!" I shouted, sprinting down the hall making my shoes squeak on the tiles. I turned the corner, following my senses and continuing to run full speed down the hall.
"Hey!" Someone shouted as I brushed past them.
"Valerie!" I yelled again, stopping when I heard a muffled groan. I slowed my pace, walking by each door with caution to test where the noise came from. "Valerie where are you?" I asked, listening for another sound.
"Chase!" I heard her gasp from behind a supply closet door. I slammed open the door and locked it behind me, turning on the foggy flourescent lights and bending down besides her as she clutched her glowing ankle in excruciating pain.
I tugged her body against me, rubbing her hair in my fingers and humming soothingly into her ear as she cried softly into my chest, her chest moving up and down rapidly, and her ankle glowing brighter and brighter. "Shh.." I rubbed her shoulders comfortingly. "It's going to be alright, I promise."
Beads of sweat dripped down her forehead and her tears streaked her makeup making her colorful eyes gloss over. She had her head resting on my chest as I held her in my arms. "Why-" She stuttered innocently. "why is this happening to me?" Her eyes widened up at me.
I rubbed a tear that was forming in her eyes. "It'll be over soon." I whispered into her neck, pulling her close against me while the glowing lights that were emitted from her ankle faded away.
She sniffled, rubbing her hands over a tiny triangle that was imprinted above the previous scar, an X. She rubbed her eyes, biting her lip as she touched it tenativley getting used to her new skin. She yelped, pulling back her hand and sucking on her burnt finger. "Thank you." She whispered, as I suddenly pulled away from her realizing she didn't need me anymore.
I nodded as I stood back up. "Just doing my job as your protector." I reminded her. This was all strictly buisness, what we had, could never be. Being so close to her, reminded me of how painful it had been when I realized that she was my Enchantress. I had only been assigned to her last week, when I cheated on her with Rachel. My job was to protect her and do anything necessary to keep her safe. It was forbidden to ever be together.
She struggled to her feet. I held out my hand and she grasped it tightly pulling herself into a standing position. "I'm sorry." She whispered as we sat in the closet just staring at eachother.
"It's not your fault." I told her, awkwardly patting her on the back.
"How many more of these will I get?" She asked, gesturing to her new scar.
I shrugged. "I wish I could tell you."
"Well this sucks." She laughed trying to lighten the mood.
"You scared the heck out of me."
"I'm sorry." She bit her lip, looking down at her feet.
"Afterschool, meet me in the courtyard."
"I have a date." She said, perking her head up.
"I don't care. You need to learn to control your elements."
"That's not fair!" She argued with me.
I stuck out my tounge at her. "You can't control me." She said, pushing past me and leaving me alone in the supply closet.
I still forgot to mention to her the one thing that came with being an Enchantress's protector. That all protector's are usually killed within the first year, and my time was running out.
Unkown POV
I smiled to myself, watching as my Enchantress ran past me, her blonde hair blowing behind her as she ran down the empty school hall. I leaned my back against the wall, turning the corner to follow her and shifting into my alter-persona. Her Protector walking briskly behind her, slamming his fist into lockers and tearing down flyers as he past. I chuckled to myself. They'd never see it coming.
