Chase POV

Him with her.

Her with him.

Everything was exactly how it was supposed to be.

"Chase White, do you agree to protect your Enchantress and therefore pledge your life to her?"

"I do." I was only fourteen when I agreed to be her Protector. I had never even met Valerie before, only seen her pictures. My schoolboy crush was part of why I chose her as my Enchantress.

"And you are aware that by doing so, you may never be able to have a romantic connection between you and your Enchantress?"

"I am aware." Although, at the time I hardly understood what was going on. I was mostly looking forward to all the awesome training I would be put through.

"And lastly, are you willing to sacrifice your life to save your Enchantress?"

"I do."

And that was the hardest part. Knowing that she'd always be with him, because eventually they'd get to me. It was actually quite rare for an Protector to live this long. But there was a reason they were keeping their distance...for now.

I dug my hands into my pockets, walking down the quiet street. Pulling my hood up over my head, I briskly walked past civilians. They were chasing me. I would reconize that wet-dog scent anywhere. "Move." I muttered, pushing a teenager my age out of the way and quickly jogging past him. I looked behind me for a moment, there were two of them. Both of them were disguised as their human form. I reached a cross walk. The light was red. A crowd swarmed around me as they waited for the light to change. The Lawless came closer. They grinned underneath their hoods. Only I could notice the tiny bits of a wolf claw protruding from their fingernails, and the way their eyes had no pupils just...darkness. The light still hadn't changed.

"Where do you think you're going?" Someone shouted at me, as I ran across the crosswalk as cars swerved around me. The Lawless followed closely behind. "Get out of the way!" Someone shouted, honking their car horn. I jumped onto the hood of an beat up chevy, rolled over the slick cover and sprinted down a side street. Looking over my shoulder, the Lawless were caught n a traffic jam. I chuckled to myself, slowing my run as they faded in the distance. That was were I made my first mistake. Never underestimate those stupid dogs, because a pack never separates.

Two more guys dressed in suits like the matrix who had shaded glasses over their eyes stepped out from an side alley onto the sidewalk patch in front of me. I chuckled under my breath, cracking my knuckles. "Two against one?' I asked, they looked at eachother and took a cautious step forward. "Hardly seems fair." I smirked, as the first one ran at me. He threw out his arm-predictable- and I grabbed onto his wrist and twisted it backwards. He yelped in pain as I bent his arm backwards,he crouched down into a squat and I kicked him in the rib, sending him skidding into a wall. "Who's next?" I laughed. The next one ran at me, kicking his legs up in the air. I stumbled backwards as their foot smacked into my left cheek. "Is that all you got?" I grunted, spinning around and kicking my leg at his head. He caught me by the ankle and twisted it around, pushing me onto my back. "I'm more of a cat person." I chuckled, propping myself onto my elbows and flipping onto my feet while holding my arms out in a fight stance. His claw scratched into my forearm as I wrapped my arm around his neck, forcing him onto his knees as his face turned blue.
