I didn't know what to do. He didn't seem all that bad, cheeky smile plastered onto his face, skin crinkling by the corners, in fact, if I hadn't known any better from what the girls told me earlier, I would've taken his hand. But I didn't, I just kept staring at him. The bartender came back to hand him a drink, looked like a gin.
"Hello?" He said, "anyone home?"
He raises the glass to his lips, before taking a gulp.
Soon realisation hit me, and it was that I must have looked like a stupid idiot.
"You're Finn?" The words slipped out of my mouth before I could stop them.
He stopped drinking, lowering the glass. "What's that meant to mean?" His features hardened. I could now tell what Annie meant about the short temper. His fists clenched and his smile whipped from his face. His pupils dilated as he moved his head to look me straight in the eye.
"Nothing, I've just, heard a bit about you, rumours," I replied.
He looked down, toying with the rim of his glass, "so you're one of those girls,"
"What's that meant to mean?" I sassed, repeating what he had said earlier, noticing the smirk form on his lips.
"You know, hear one little rumour, and believe it all," he said.
"Maybe I'm not like that, maybe I'm one of those 'don't just a book by its cover' girls"
"Maybe you are" he looked up at me, emerald irises reflecting against my brown ones.
"So what have you heard about me?" He said, taking another gulp of his drink.
I looked away, down at my empty glass, suddenly feeling the alcohol kick in and make me feel confident. "That you're a good for nothing man whore who has sex with as many girls as he pleases before kicking them to the curb."
He snorted "anything else?"
"You do drugs."
He stopped drinking. "I don't do drugs, I sell them, it's a completely different concept"
"It's really not, it's bad just to be in the situation, and because of that I really shouldn't be talking to you"
He smiled "you've got a lot of confidence, you know that right?"
"Not really, if I was sober I'd probably be running out of here, maybe be at Waterloo by now, catch the tube back home"
"Where's home?"
"I'm not going to go telling my personal details to a stranger"
"C'mon-"
"And can I just tell you, that if you want sex, you better leave that seat right now because you're not getting any tonight"
"I'm not going anywhere"
"Then I assume you don't want sex"
There was an awkward pause, in which I turned around to search for Annie and Lara. Middle of the dance floor. Jumping about like a pair of lunatics, but they looked like they were having fun. Lara's hair was now set loose, like I had predicted.
"They your friends?" He asked, I looked back at him, his drink was finished, the empty glass being twisted between his thumb and forefinger.
"Yes, they dragged me here, I didn't want to come"
"Well if you hadn't come then you wouldn't have met me"
"I'm not sure I would've like to meet you anyway"
"That hurt, and I thought you were one of those 'don't just a book by its cover' girls" he said.
"Sorry."
He chuckled.
"What?" I looked at him, a grin on his lips again.
"I don't even know your name." He said, looking back up at me.
I smiled, trying to block out all the negative things that Lara and Annie had said.
"Fray, I'm fray"
He held his hand out, hoping this time that I would actually take it. His large hands drowned my small one, but I managed to notice a metal ring, in the shape of a cross adorning his right ring finger.
"Beautiful name, unique"
I blushed, saying "I can't believe you're making me blush"
"What's wrong with me making you blush?"
"I don't, I just..." I gave up.
After another moment of silence, I decided to answer his question.
"I'm Ivy Fray Payne. I moved down here from Wolverhampton couple of weeks ago, got a job in a cafe, living in some apartment somewhere in this city"
"So your names actually Ivy?" He said, swivelling round in his chair to face me.
"Well yes, but I prefer Fray. Only my brother calls me Ivy"
"You have a brother, older or younger?"
"Older, one year, you?"
"Younger sister,"
"And a twin brother, saw him earlier, with those other boys"
"Oh, Jack, Harry and Zayn," he said, turning around to look into the crowd. "They need to loosen up a bit, let go, they are always, so, alert, cautious. Clubs were built to have fun in, right?"he said. I spotted Jack in the crowd, dancing with a girl, but not other two. "Wanna dance?" Finn asked me.
"Not really, I'm too drunk, I'll probably make a fool out of myself, and plus, I don't dance with strangers"
"Pity,"he turned back round to face me.
"I thought cool kids don't dance?" I challenged.
"I think you'll find the saying is actually cool kids do dance"
"Not it's not, that makes no sense, it's pathetic"
"No it's not"
"Yes it is"
"No it's not"
"I'm not having a pointless argument with someone I've only just met," I said, looking up at the clock by the bar. If was quarter to 12.
"I think I'm gonna head off, it's getting late," I said, pushing my chair back, the metal made a screeching noise on the flooring.
"I can give you a lift if you want?"
"I'm also not letting someone I've only just met drive me home, thank you. That would mean giving a stranger my home address. Besides, I can just get a cab," I said, walking towards the exit, hearing feet shuffle behind me.
"Yes, but that would mean paying money," he shouted back at me, over the music.
I turned around, "Listen, I don't know what your deal is, but I'm not broke, and if you're that desperate for sex, I'm sure that there are many other willing ladies in here to please you, and before you ask, I am perfectly capable of hailing my own cab."
And with that, I walked away, but not before hearing him say "see you around, Fray".
I walked down the street, taking out my phone from my clutch and sending a quick text to Lara to explain why I'd left.
I then heard somebody wolf whistle in front of me. I looked up, it was the same guy from earlier.
"You're that girl from the club aren't you? Bet lover boy isn't here to save you know, is he?" He said, before grabbing hold of my wrists and dragging me into a secluded alleyway.
"Stop, please-"
"Shut up," he presses my against the wall, the wet bricks dampening my top. "This might hurt a bit, but I'll make it quick"
"No, please, you don't know what you doing" I managed to say, before he grabbed my face with his hand, pain immediately aching from his rough fingers on my skin.
"One more word, and they'll be a round two," he threatened, unbuckling his belt and taking his hand off my face to undo his flies.
I used this time wisely, "HELP! SOMEBODY PLEAS HE-" I screamed, before a sharp slap came across my cheek, throwing my to the ground from the impact.
"You little bitch-" he said, but wasn't Able to finish his sentence before someone came and punched him hard on the nose.
"What the hell is wrong with you?! What kind of man hits a woman!?" It was Finn. "Didn't I tell you to fuck off earlier? Stupid son of a bitch." By this time Finn was fuming, the veins on his neck popping. Knuckles white from clenching so hard. Breathing heavily as if to hold in a shout. He walked towards the man, throwing various punches at him, it was then that I remembered what Lara had told me.
'I heard they almost killed someone'.
By the looks of it, Finn had no intention to stop. So I staggered up, the effects of the hit and the alcohol not helping, and walked over to him.
"Finn, Finn stop." I stepped in front of him, pressing my hands against his chest, pushing him backwards, away from the half broken figure laying of the floor. "Stop, he's not worth it, Finn"
He took his eyes off the man, looking at me. I noticed that he irises had gone shade darker. His eyes then travelled down looking at my probably bruising cheek, his eyes narrowing. "He was going to rape you, Fray"
"Yes, but he didn't."
"You're saving the skin of someone who could have ruined your life," he said, the man, now groaning loudly.
"Shut up" Finn said, between gritted teeth. The man's moans silenced.
"Let's just leave, c'mon, I'll let you drop me home," I attempted.
He grinned, his eyebrows raising, "is that an invitation" he said cheekily.
"For the last time Finn, I'm not having sex with you"
"Worth a shot," he said before taking my wrist, and leading me to his car.
I looked back and the man on the ground and noticed he was holding his privates, and I couldn't hep but snigger.
"What?" Finn said.
"Nothing, just something I saw" somehow on the way to his car, his hand slipped down from my wrist so that he could clasp my hand in his. I did not know whether this was intentional or accidental, but somehow, I felt that my hand was complete with his protectively holding it. It felt right.
