I looked at the paper again, checking I hadn't misread it.
'We know who you are.'
The words hadn't changed. I dropped the paper on the floor, stepping back in shock. Who knew who I was? Was this some joke? Did someone set this up or something? Question flooded my mind.
My first instinct was to then reach for my phone, and call the only person I trusted in this situation. Finn. I debated whether to call someone else, before picking up my phone, and going to my recent calls. There was the number I had dialled not 5 hours ago. Reluctantly, I pressed the number, putting the phone to my ear and bending down to retrieve the piece of paper, my hands shaking.
I realised that in a way, this was some sort of threat, a warning. The dialling tone ended abruptly.
"Fray? Fray, is that you?" Finn asked frantically.
"Yes," I replied, my voice as quiet as a mouse.
"I've been calling you for hours, Fray! You scared me, I thought something had happened..." He trailed off.
"You have? I've got no missed calls," I said, confused.
"You haven't? Maybe I dialled the wrong number then, where are you?" He said.
"I'm at my apartment," I was still speaking quietly, my voice not as strong as it usually is. I think Finn caught on.
"Fray, is something wrong?"
"I... I need to tell you in person, we need to meet," I said, staring down at the note.
"I can't come to you, I'm caught up in something," he said. "Why don't you get a cab to mine?" He offered.
I thought about it, but then decided it was the only way to meet him tonight.
"Alright, what's your address?" I said, placing the note on the counter and walking round to grab a pen.
"Highway apartments, London, just tell the driver highway apartments, he'll know," he said.
I scribbled down Highway Apartments on bare space on my notice board, and walked round to my bedroom.
"Bring a change of clothes," his voice was muffled now.
"Why?" I asked.
"I'm not letting you go home by yourself, and judging by the way you're speaking I think you have something quite important to tell me, so I think we'll be talking for a while, which means it will be quite late by the time we're done," he explained.
"Alright," I gave in. "I'll see you soon," I sighed.
"Okay, bye beautiful," he said, before hanging up. I was a bit annoyed Finn had mentioned nothing about earlier, about Jimmy, but I suspected he was saving it for later. I opened my wardrobe, and tiredly stuffed a jumper, socks, bra, and underwear into a rucksack. I walked into the bathroom, and grabbed my toiletry bag, putting my toothbrush and face wash into the bag, assuming Finn had toothpaste. I also chucked some makeup in as well, noticing Mount Everest setting a new record. I grabbed my 'lady stuff' bag, and added a few more tampons just in case.
I put my toiletry bag into my rucksack, before scanning my room for anything I might have missed. I pulled my phone charger out the plug and winded it up also chucking it in the rucksack.
I decided to change quickly now, as I didn't really want to go out at 8 o'clock in my pyjamas, so I threw on at tank top and hoodie, and some shorts, as it was quite nice weather outside. Today it had been really sunny, and sunset was getting later. I zipped the rucksack up, walking into the kitchen and putting my oyster, keys, earphones and wallet in to the front pocket. Swinging my backpack onto my shoulders I slipped my flip flops on, before checking if I'd left anything on. I switched all the lights off and closed the doors before heading to the front door, grabbing my phone on the way. It was then I remembered the whole point I was going to Finn's place. I turned around, picking the note up off the counter and stuffing it into my pocket before turning the hallway light off and opening the front door. I pulled my hood over my head and closed the door, walking to the lift and pressing the button. Checking my phone, I noticed a recent text from a familiar number.
To: Fray
From: Unknown
When you get here, come to the top floor.
I saved the number as Finn, stepping into the lift and hitting ground.
To: Finn
From: Fray
Okay, see you soon.
The doors opened, and I stepped out, the warm air hitting me as I walked out the building. I wandered along the road for a bit, before a cab came into view, and I hailed it. I stepped inside after the driver had pulled over, asking for highway apartments.
"Fancy part of town that is," he said gruffly. "Always wanted to live there."
"I've never been," I admitted.
"You'll love it, no one doesn't," he said.
Soon we approached big lights and tall buildings, the streets slightly busier, and I knew that we were in the heart of London. The driver took a few more turns before stopping inside a grand building.
"That's, £9.50 please," he said, looking at the meter.
I got out a £10 note from my wallet, and handed in over to him.
"Keep the change, thanks for the ride," I said, stepping out.
"Cheers," I heard him reply, before I closed the door and he drove off. I turned around. The building was very tall, looming over the surrounding ones. A red carpet lay in front of the double doors, gazebo like cover on top. I slowly walked inside, feeling underdressed as soon as I saw the interior. Chandeliers hung from the high ceiling, marble embedded into the floor. Desks lay either side of the room, and finely dressed ladies sat behind them, not a crease on their uniform. I must have looked like a lost badger in there.
Finally, I spotted the the lifts, and walked over the them, only to find a bell boy standing near them.
He noticed me, and pressed the button for me, smiling.
"Where to, ma'am?" He said.
"Um, top floor?" I responded. In my mind I was contemplating whether I had actually come to the right place.
"To Mr Harries," he said.
I nodded shyly. The lift door opened, and I walked in, looking at myself in the my plain self against the in the mirror against the grandness of the reception. I sighed, looking at the buttons. The highest one was P. P for... Penthouse. Of course Finn had the Penthouse. I smiled to myself, pressing the button and waiting as the lift went up. It suddenly came to a halt, and I was expecting the doors to open, but they didn't.
I then heard a noise from above me. I looked up, and noticed a camera in the corner of the lift, moving.
I rolled my eyes at it. "It's me, it's Fray," I said, and the doors opened as soon as I had finished speaking. I stepped out into a hallway. To my right was a big living room, a kitchen to the side on it, and to my left the corridor went further down, doors either side of it. I suspected bedrooms. I turned to my right, noticing the modern theme of the penthouse. French windows lay next to the kitchen. Granite kitchen tops and white cupboards. I turned to the living room. A black sofa faced a wide tv, and a few more similar chairs sat next to it. Further in, behind the sofa was a small dining room, separated from the living room by long black blinds hanging from the ceiling. I looked up, wondering where the light was coming from, as zero lights were on, and sure enough, large windows formed a roof for the penthouse, moonlight spilling into the room.
"Fray?" I heard someone say. I turned around, and there Finn stood. He looked more or less the same as earlier, except his hair was slightly more mussed.
"What was it you wanted to tell me?" He said gently, stepping close and laying his hands on my upper arms.
"I... I don't," I didn't know what to say.
"Just think about it, it'll come out," he said, brushing a strand of hair behind my ear.
"I got a letter in the post today. I thought you might want to see if." I said, firmly.
His eyebrows furrowed. I pulled the note of of my pocket, before looking down at it and handing it to him.
He took it, staring at me before unfolding it and looking down to read it.Hey guys!!!
Soooo, how do you think Finn will react to the note? And who do you think it's from?? Just to clarify, it's meant to be summerish time in the story, which is why Fray is going out in shorts and tank tops at 8 o'clock in the evening.
What do you think of the new cover? It's a bit squashed so sorry about that!
I have loads of tests guys, wish me luck...
