I leant against the counter, waiting for Dan to arrive. My fingers soon found their way to my pocket and pulled out my phone. I attempted to distract myself (playing candy crush seemed to be the only way out) but failed miserably and eventaully gave in, clicking the phone button and going to my recent calls. I brought my phone to my ear after hitting his name.
"Hey beautiful," he said.
"Hi," I turned around, leaning my elbows on the counter. I predicted the shop was empty because it was a very hot day, and no one wanted to go to a coffee shop to get hot drinks at a time like this. We should really start selling soft drinks.
"Why are you calling?" He asked.
"I'm bored, there's no one in the shop," I said.
"Well, where's that guy you work with?"
I glanced up at the clock, it was 9.30, Dan should be here by now. "I don't know, he's late, and he hasn't rung in."
"Does that mean he's not gonna get paid for a day?" Finn teased.
As if on cue, a sweaty figure ran in, clad in denim cut offs and a grey pullover.
"Sorry, Dan just arrived, talk later," I rushed.
"Bye beautiful," I heard him chuckle, before I hung up.
"Where have you been! Do you know how bored I've been?" I shouted.
"Sorry, my alarm resetted," he said.
I scoffed. "Typical. Why are you wearing a pullover? It's like, 28 degrees out!"
He pulled his jumper off, his biceps bulging as he threw it to the ground, revealing his sweaty tank which clung to his back, showing his tense muscles...
Wait, what?
"I'm sorry, I didn't know there was a dress code," he said sarcastically.
I rolled my eyes. "Whatever, just go and freshen up," I said, gesturing to the staff bathroom.
He smirked at me, picking his jumper up from the floor and chucking it on the counter.
"You obviously didn't realised this is a clean cafe, and not just some stinky dump," I called after him, bundling up his jumper and chucking it to the back of his head. I heard him laugh, and then a door shut.
I went back to my phone, remembering to third text I had received last night that I hadn't checked. I clicked on it, revealing a short message, from Lara.
To: Fray
From: Lara
Tomorrow, 5, Yo Sushi, Westfield.
Xxxoxoxo
That meant that Lara wanted to meet tonight.
I quickly clicked her number, the dialling tone ringing through my ears as I brought the phone to my ear again.
She picked up after two dials. "Hello," she said in her charming work voice.
I laughed. "Hello?" She repeated.
"Do you not look at your caller id or something?" I asked.
"Oh, it's you," she said.
"Excuse me?" I propped myself up on the counter.
"Sorry, I've just come out of a very important meeting that didn't go very well," she said.
I furrowed my eyebrows. "Is this the case you told me about?"
"Yes, the one I wasn't meant to tell you about, remember? But you and your manipulative mind and your stupid voice pried me out of it," I heard the shuffling of papers over the line.
"Well lawyers are meant to have strong minds, Lara, it's not my fault you can't defend yourself against a small 19 year old girl," I teased.
"Shut up, I tell you everything, in fact, I've got something very important to tell you tonight, you down?" She asked.
"Oh my God, did Lara Miles just say, 'you down'?"
"You're such an idiot," she replied.
"Annie asked me if she wanted to meet up for dinner tonight as well, we kinda had a fight," I said.
"Oooh, was it a bitch fight, did you bring out the claws?" Just then Dan came back from the bathroom, looking a lot better. His face was red but clean, his black eye fading, and he had changed his top, to a purple tank with white logo.
"Why do people always associate claw with girl fights, like seriously? Just because cats are feline," I questioned.
"It's a stupid saying Fray, why do you have to be so pedantic about everything?" Lara countered. Dan had started walking towards me, smirking. I narrowed my eyes at him. "So tonight? Why so early?"
"Because there's this movie I wanna watch afterwards and the timings are either have early dinner or late dinner, so I went in there and thought early dinner would be easiest," she explained. Dan was reaching out for my phone, whilst I tried to kick him away, failing as his strength overpowered mine. He was obviously trying to annoy me.
"Fuck off," I said, hiding my smile.
"I'm sorry, what was that?" Lara said.
Dan had pulled me down from the counter, trying to grab my phone as I leaned away from him.
"Nothing, just this stupid new guy at work," I said, emphasising in the stupid.
"By stupid new guy you mean new hot friend."
"No, no way," I said.
"Sure sure, bye babe, see you later," she said.
Dan grabbed my phone, but not before I shouted bye back and ended the call.
He frowned when he saw the screen, huffing and chucking my phone back to me.
"What the hell was that?" I said.
"Bored."
"How do you think I've felt for the last half hour?" I sassed.
He muttered a remark under his breath, but I could tell that he was grinning.
"Where did you get the top from?" I asked, curious.
"Found it in a dumpster out back," he answered.
"Ahaahaha, your pathetic attempt at a joke humours me," I said sarcastically.
He sniggered. "Would you like a drink?" He said.
"Sure," I replied, taking a chocolate bar and throwing some coins into the tips jar.
"Technically, that's not paying," he said, staring the coffee machine.
"Meh, I'll pay later."
I walked to the sink, dropping the wrapper into the bin - yes, I eat chocolate that quickly - and turned around to be face to face with Dan. Our proximity couldn't have been closer, and I could feel his breath on my face. We were looking at each other straight in the eye before he decided to do something.
"Sorry, someone moved the coffee," he said, gesturing to the pot of coffee sitting next to the sink.
I half laughed, moving away from his body and towards the counter.
"I keep a spare top here, I mean, you never know when you're gonna need one, and well, I did today," he explained.
The bell of the shop run, and I turned around, making my way towards the till when I froze in my spot, recognising at once who it was.
There, a smirk playing on his lips, stood Jimmy.
My first instinct was to make a sharp 180 degree turn and walk away, straight through the staff door, a beeline to the exit, but I stayed calm, gathering my senses and leant against the counter.
Tiny bruises were scattered on his face, and his right eyebrow had a scabbed cut on it. He walked up to the counter, placing his elbow on it and sneering up at me.
"How can I help you?" I said, as smoothly as I could. I heard Dan snort in the background.
"Hello Fray, how've you been?" He twirled the pad of his finger around the rim of the tip jar.
"What do you want?" I said, this time more firmly.
"Nothing, just stumbed upon this coffee shop, wanted to have a look inside, how coincidental that you work here?" He said.
"Bullshit." I whispered, noticing Dan had stopped making our drinks through my peripheral vision.
"You coming to my party on Friday?" He said cockily.
"Wouldn't miss it for the world," I said monotonously.
He grinned, and his hoodie fell down his shoulder, revealing a tattoo on his upperam. A compass, north pointing upwards, south pointing downwards to some more elaborate. His pulled his hoodie back up before I caught what it was. "Got any yourself?" He said.
"Maybe, nothing you need to know about," I said.
He sniggered, picking up a granola bar and chucking it on the counter. He looked over at Dan. "One Americano please, seeing as you seem so attentive to your job," he said.
I kept a straight face as I silently punched in the costs of the items into the till. "£3.50 please," I said.
He stuffed his hand in his front pocket, pulling out some coins and pushing them around in his palm with his thumb. "So, you and Finn huh?" He asked, dropping the change on the counter.
I took it, ignoring his question and walking to Dan who had his drink ready. "Who's that?" He asked.
"Just someone I know," I replied quietly, taking the warm cup out his hands going back to the counter. "Why do you want a hot Americano on a day like this Jimmy?" I said, my voice wavering. He sensed my uncomfortness and leaned even closer.
"Get any notes in the post recently, Fray?" He muttered. I froze, my fingers tightening on the cup. "You probably think that Finn's this perfect man, who, I don't know, changes when he's around you, becomes this happy, jolly guy who you coudn't possibly imagine doing anything bad, right? Well do you even know what he's doing right now? Do you even know why he gets to his flat in the middle of the night will fresh, open cut on his knuckles, or a couple of bruises? You don't know shit, Fray. You prance in here, hoping for the young love you've always wanted, right? Well let me tell you something, if you stay with this guy, that's not what you're gonna get. You're gonna get some messed up love story, in which he makes you think he loves you, fucks you, and then leaves you." He snarled, finishing his rant.
Those last words hit me. What if he was right? What if eveything Lara and Annie had warned me about was true, and I would end up on the streets, kicked to the curb after Finn got what he wanted? But what if he was lying, trying to manipulate me into leaving Finn. But then, why would he want me to leave Finn, what was in it for him? "You're lying," I said, the confidence lost in my voice.
He laughed. "Oh really, I'm lying am I? Answer one thing for me Fray, one question, and I'll let you believe I'm lying." I gulped. "Where is Finn right now?"
I didn't move, didn't react at all. Because he had won. That still didn't let me believe him though. "How do you know about the note in my post?" I asked.
Jimmy grinned evily, his dazzling blue eyes shimmering in the light. He suddenly grabbed my wrist, which I didn't realise was shaking. "Don't trust him, Fray. He's not good for you. An innconent little girl like you shouldn't be wandering into this kind of society Fray. Leave him now, while you still have the chance." He growled.
I pulled my wrist from his grasp, thrusting the cup into his free hand. "Answer my question," I said.
He grinned childishly, before tapping the side of his nose with his finger, and picking up his granola bar. I narrowed my eyes at him. "Fine then, stay with him, but don't say I didn't warn you when he breaks your heart," he said, raising both hands into the air.
I snorted. "This isn't some cheesy romcom where I go running home in the rain wearing Finn's shirt," I said.
He raised his eyebrows. "If you say so," he said, leaning back, but then stepping forward and coninuing. "I still think you'd be a good fuck, though." He winked at me.
I fake smlied, as I watched him turn around. "One more thing," I said, and he spun around, facing me once more.
I pulled my arm back, before swinging it upwards and punching him right below the nose.Hey guys!!!!
