The coffee shop was not that busy today. A couple of people walked in and out every couple of minutes. Various tables were occupied by couples, people with laptops, a lady talking down the phone with a harsh look on her face, a young girl and boy chatting opposite each other.
I walked over to their table, collecting their drained glasses as they smiled up at me.
"Urgh, she's so pretty," I heard her say as I walked away.
"Not as pretty as you," the boy said.
"God, you're so cheesy," she laughed.
That reminded me of Finn, but, at the moment, everything reminded me of Finn, especially one thing in particular.
A rose cupcake sat behind the glass cabinet at the counter, a new item on the menu. The luscious chocolate sponge reminded me of his hair, the rose icing of his lips, and the green leaves bordering the cake his eyes. I hadn't tried one yet though. I wasn't allowed.
Placing my tray down on the counter, I proceeded to walk round and wash the glasses, still vaguely hearing the young couple chatting, but not well enough to make out what they were saying, which was probably a good thing, as eavesdropping wasn't a very nice habit of mine.
"Need any help with that?" Dan said. Dan, the new guy I had seen when I had come here with Lara. Brown hair. Blue eyes. Quite good looking if you ask me. He was from America, from LA.
"Nah, it's fine, I've just finished," I said, putting the dried glasses onto the stack by the till.
"Um, so you know this coffee machine, can you just talk me through it one more time?" He said, his strong accent ringing through the words, hand scratching the back of his neck.
I chuckled, this was about the 5th time Dan had asked me to show him how the coffee machine worked, and I could tell he was trying to act cool about it.
I walked to the machine.
"Okay, look, so first you make sure that there are beans up to this line, and then you have to select whatever the customer wants," I said, pointing at the various buttons strewn on the lid of the machine, "and then you just pull this lever down."
I turned around, startled by how close Dan was.
"Oh, sorry," he said, stepping back.
"No worries, you got that?" I smiled, feeling the rose cupcakes staring at me.
"Yep, I think so," he said.
"Remember to put a cup under the funnel," I said.
"Yes, Fray, I'm not that stupid," he rolled his eyes, smiling.
Just then the door ringed, and I turned round to get to the till but Dan stopped me, grabbing my arm.
"It's okay, I got this," he walked to the till.
I sighed, before going round back to go to the bathroom. I looked at myself in the mirror. My chestnut locks were pulled up into a messy bun, strands of hair falling out from my gazillion bobby pins randomly thrown into my hair. I hadn't bothered with makeup this morning, after deciding I was having a good day, but now I wish I had at least put some concealer on, as I had noticed a pimple forming on my forehead.
"Shit," I said, moving closer to the mirror, staring at the little bugger. "Fucking acne." Just then my phone started to ring, and I jumped back, almost falling into the toilet seat.
I fished out my phone from my cocktail apron. It was Annie. I brought it to my ear.
"Hello," I said.
"Fray! I've been trying to call you all day!"
"You have?" I said, oblivious to the fact.
"Yes! And then I remembered you'd probably be working so..."
"Yep, Monday,"
"So I heard you went on a date with Finn, what the hell have you gotten yourself into, Fray?" She confronted.
"What happened to don't judge a book by its cover? Finn is actually quite a nice guy, he didn't seem as bad as you described him," I argued.
"Fray, you don't get it! You haven't lived here forever, you haven't grown up being told what's right and what's wrong! I have! And I'm telling you that you should stay away from Finn!" She said.
"You know what, Annie, I like him! I like him, and if that gets you angry, I don't fucking care. We kissed last night, and I felt something, it was special, and nothing you say now will make me change my mind about that," I shouted down the line.
"Fray, listen to me," she said through gritted teeth. "Stay away from Finn. These are drug-dealers we are talking about, he's probably just using you, don't trust him."
"If he did want me for sex, he would have done it by now, but he's not using me, I know, I went on a date with him, not you, I know what he's really like,"
"Oh, pfff, one date, what's the big deal?" She said.
"I don't get why you're being so bitchy. I might have found someone, someone that I like, and you're in no way supporting me at all. Call me back when you realise what an asshole you're being," I said, before hitting the end button on my phone and stuffing it back into my apron.
My fingers caught on something else in my apron, and I grasped it and pulled it out. It was a crumpled up piece of paper. I unravelled it, revealing a phone number.
'Wear something nice.'
I could almost picture him saying it, smirking.
I sighed, before punching in the digits and one again bringing the phone to my ear.
"Hello," I heard his familiar voice say.
"Hey Finn, it's Fray," I said, slumping back against the tiled wall of the bathroom.
"Hey Fray, I was wondering when you would call," he said, I could almost hear him smiling.
"Well I figured, you don't know what time I finish work, so, I had to call you to tell you," I said.
"Oh yeah? And what time is that?"
I looked down at my watch. Shit.
"In about 2 minutes, that's not good, sorry," I said, rubbing my temples.
"Not to worry. Is everything okay? You sound a little... frustrated," he said, I could hear silent music in the background.
"Are you in the car?" I asked.
"Maybe,"
I sighed yet again. "I just, I had an argument with my friend."
"A cat fight?"
I laughed dryly.
"What was is about?" He asked.
"You," I blurted.
"Me?"
"She told me you weren't good, and that I should stay away from you," I said, standing up and turning around.
"And what did you tell her back?"
"You really want to know?"
"Yes"
"I told her that I liked you, and that I felt something in our kiss, and that you weren't using me and that she was being a bitch," I said.
"See, you do become confident with me, it's not just the alcohol," I chuckled. "What do are you doing now?" He asked.
"Staring at this fucking pimple on my forehead," I said.
"Is it protruding from you skin?"
"I understand if you want to stop seeing me after you see me today. It's like I've got fucking Mount Everest growing on my face," I said.
He laughed. I walked out of the bathroom, back into the shop. No one stared at me, and I was thankful I hadn't actually shouted that loudly at Annie. I made my way to the counter, slipping over it and entering the staff area.
"I think I should go now," I said, noticing Dan looked a bit flustered by the cashier.
"Okay, just do one favour for me before you go." The door ringed.
"And what is that?"
"Turn around," I did as he asked.
There, dressed in blue skinny jeans and a black t-shirt, stood Finn, a smile adorning his face.
"Hey beautiful."Hey guys! Sorry for the really long wait!! But I promise I'll make it up to you!!
What do you think of Dan? I picture him as Logan Lerman, just a bit older.
