"You need to put on some make-up, Mum," said Ellie.

Ellie handed over her make-up bag. Mum fumbled around and pulled out a battered case and dabbed some rouge on her cheeks.

"You need some lipstick too," said Ellie, obviously agitated.

"But blush is all I ever wear!"

"Mum," said Ellie. "You're meeting with my in-laws."

"But how does lipstick make me look respectable?"

"Think of it like this," said Ellie. "At the moment, you are a black and white television. With a dash of lipstick, you are a colour one."

"I don't know, Ellie," said Mum, patting her cheeks. "Sometimes it's best to stick with what you know."

"All I'm looking for is a bit of effort," Ellie's voice cracked. "But don't worry Mum...if it's too much trouble..."

"It's not too much trouble," said Mum quietly. "I just don't see why I have to pretend..."

"I'm not asking for you to pretend."

"I don't see-"

"I'm just asking you to put on some lipstick!"

"There's no need to shout, El," said Mum.

"Wearing lipstick is a sign," cried Ellie. "That co-ordinating a wedding will be no problem for you because you know how to organize your own two lips in a satisfactory manner."

Ellie was teetering on the edge of an emotional breakdown, she had all the telltale signs. She was red around the cheeks. Her eyes were bulging. Her speech was becoming increasingly agitated. If someone didn't intervene, the night was going to be ruined.

"Mum," I said. "Maybe you should let Ellie do your make-up, think of it as a practice run for the wedding."

"That's a good idea," said Mum. "A practice run."

They were in the bathroom for twenty minutes. When they came out. Mum looked like a rainbow paint display.

I hesitated. "I thought wearing blue eyeshadow was out now?"

"What would you know?" said Ellie.

Dad walked in to the kitchen. "Oh God! What on earth has happened in here?"

Mum's bottom lip flickered. "Ellie gave me a makeover."

"You can't go to Travis' like that," said Dad.

"Alright, Dad!" cried Ellie. "It was an experiment."

"She looks like a rainbow trout."

"Dad! Just... You don't have to go on!"

Mum raced off to the bathroom.

Lachie burst in to the kitchen, with Nate following, shortly afterwards.

"Uh, what just happened?"

"Why is Dad looking like that?"

"Never mind," I said, hearing the loud bang of a door. I rushed after Mum.

I went to the bathroom door. I could hear the sound of rushing water, some sniffling and sobs.

"Mum?" I called. "It's not too bad." I tried to think of something good to say. "You look... tanned."

Mum opened the door. Black mascara ran down her cheeks in rivers. "You tell Ellie, that if I'm not good enough to go as I usually am, I'm not good enough to go."

Ellie's voice floated down the hall. "Come on, already!" she cried. "We have to go! They'll be waiting for us! Travis' dad gets upset when people are late!"

I turned to Mum and patted her shoulder. "Of course you're good enough to go."

Ellie stormed up the hallway, her turquoise dress flapping and her hair almost static. "Are we ready to go or what?"

Mum smiled and took in a deep breath and smoothed down her skirt. "All ready then."

Ellie came up closer and stared. You've still got mascara-"

"Shut up!" I said. "She can fix it in the car."
