Four:
Carmen looked in her mirror as she applied her mascara. "Why are you getting all that makeup on? You're gonna get trashed anyway." Her roommate Emma said. "I want to look good. Besides, JT is still single." Carmen replied. "Hey, he's mine." Emma said, giggling. "We'll see who he bangs first." Carmen said, also giggling. She finished with her eyeliner and patted her hair. She turned to Emma, who was in a rocking chair reading. "You still have some dinner on the corner of your mouth." Carmen said to Emma. She quickly wiped the side of her mouth with her sleeve. "I can't blame you. Even though how childish it was, the Macaroni and Cheese was actually really good." "And with the beef? Oh, it was delicious. Jeanette is sure a cook." Emma said. A pause occurred between the two as thumping noises started coming from downstairs. "The party started. I'm gonna go. Are you sure you don't wanna come? It's gonna be so fun." Carmen asked. "I'm sure." Emma replied, looking back down at her book. "Okay. See you later." Carmen said. She opened the door and left. The door didn't fully close, which allowed the loud music to be fully audible to Emma. She finished her sentence in her book and stood up. Before she could even take a step, she saw Logan in the hall. She didn't look at Emma so much as Wyatt, who was right behind her. They were both in formal attire, like they were going to a school dance. Wyatt looked into Emma's room and saw her. "Hey Logan, I'll meet you down there. I'm gonna talk to Emma for a sec." Wyatt said to Logan. "Okay." Logan nodded and continued down the hall. Wyatt entered Emma's room. "Are you not going to the party?" Wyatt asked Emma. "I don't do parties very well." Emma replied. "Don't take this the wrong way, but I'm surprised Adin invited you. You know, being your ex and all." Wyatt said. "Well, he knows I'm good friends with JT, so I guess if you invite him, you get me." Emma replied. "Huh." Wyatt said, looking away from Emma. He paused for a second and looked back at Emma. "You should come to the party. You'll have fun." Wyatt said. "I could give you a million reasons why I don't want to come-" "You should really come." Wyatt interrupted. Emma paused for a second at Wyatt. "Okay, I will. Just let me put some perfume on and I'll be down there in a second." Emma said. She walked past Wyatt to a dresser. She swiped a bottle of perfume off the top and sprayed her neck. Wyatt started to leave the room. "Wait!" Emma said before Wyatt was completely out of the room. Wyatt turned to Emma. She fast-walked to Wyatt's side and they left the room. With every step they made toward the stairs, the music and laughing became louder. Wyatt stepped aside at the stairs and let Emma go down first. "Thanks." She said. They walked down the stairs and found the lounge room transformed. A smoke machine made the foyer foggy. They saw Taylor and Brock in an open door way, talking with red cups in their hands. "Hey Logan, Wyatt's here." Brock said loudly to a figure inside the room. The figure walked past Taylor and Brock and looked at Emma and Wyatt. It was Logan. "Hello." She said. "In here are the drinks. In the Billiards room is dancing and music." She said to Wyatt and Emma. "Okay. I'm going wherever you want." Wyatt said to Logan. "Okay then, I guess we'll go dance." Logan replied. She walked up to Wyatt and grabbed his hand. "You can go wherever." Wyatt said to Emma. "Okay. I'll stay with Taylor and Brock I guess." Emma replied to Wyatt. "Okay, Wyatt. Let's go dance." Logan said, taking Wyatt away from Emma. Emma watched Wyatt being dragged away. Logan and Wyatt turned a corner not far from the staircase and disappeared. Blinking lights and music were coming from that hall. She assumed that's where the majority of partying was occurring. She felt uncomfortable in loud social environments, so she felt that staying by the drinks table in the lounge room was more her speed. She turned to Taylor and Brock who still stood in the doorway of the lounge room. "How goes it?" Brock asked Emma. She approaches him nervously. "Um, good? I don't think we've met." Emma said. "I'm Brock." Said Brock. He shook Emma's hand. "And I'm Taylor. Nice to meet you." Taylor said to Emma. "What's up?" "Nothing much. I haven't met a lot of people here before." Emma said. "Are you afraid of new people?" Brock asked. Taylor looked at him like that was a bad question to ask. "Yeah, kind of." Emma said quietly. "Well it's okay." Brock replied. He looked at Taylor. "We don't bite." Emma laughed a little, but found her laugh a bit creepy. "Hey, I don't mean to intrude on a private subject, but you look a lot like Adin's ex girlfriend." Taylor said. "It's because I am." Emma replied with a straight face. "Oh. Nice?" Taylor tired, but couldn't find the right word. "Hey, I'm over him, but I rather not talk about us together." Emma said. "Oh okay. Sorry." Taylor said. "It's fine." Emma said. "Hey, didn't Jeanette say there was going to be a fire after sundown?" "Yeah, it's going on right now. I think Sara and Andie are out there." Brock said, pointing to the front door. "Can I just leave and go outside?" Emma asked the two. "Adin said this isn't summer camp. We can." Brock replied. "You can go." "Okay, I think I'm gonna do that." Emma said. "It was nice meeting you." "It was nice meeting you too." Taylor said. "See you later." Brock said, waving to Emma. She went through the foyer and tried not to choke on the smoke. She opened the front door and felt the chill in the air. Smoke rushed out onto the veranda. She stepped out and took a breath of fresh air. She rolled her eyes and shut the door.
