I have only been in this town for a few days, not really leaving my apartment but that didn't stop my mother from filling me in. She had grew up here, making herself reacquainted with old friends and not hesitant to make new ones. This is her home.
Not mine.
But nonetheless, I make it a mission to find a group of friends who didn't remind me of my old ones. Ones that welcomed me, that didn't judge me, were afraid of my intimidating look or my mouth that could drive them away anytime that I opened it.
And I knew I was going to find someone at least in Riverdale High to fit that criteria.
Walking into the school, I don't really pay attention to detail as everything about it seemed typical. Small lockers that sit on tiled floors and rambunctious teenagers that slam into them as I walk through it all, struggling to find the office so I could pick up my class schedule.
I ran into many faces, most of them forgettable, except for one that belonged to a girl who seemed lifeless amongst the rowdy crowd. But despite a sadness that lays in her pale blue eyes, she still appears menacing. A force to be reckoned with as her long ginger strands compliment her pale porcelain skin.
There was something bothering her.
I finally make my way to the school's office where a polite woman gave me my schedule and told me where I could find every class. The high school isn't that huge, so I didn't expect to get lost but it was awfully nice of her.
I find my way to my first two classes, finding myself drowning an immense amount of boredom. Of course geometry would bore anyone to death, but English was equally as boring. Taking my English classes in New York were always intriguing but here they're just lackluster.
Sitting straight up in my seat, I prepare for my biology class by taking out my compact mirror to apply some lip gloss on my lips. Opening the mirror, I immediately begin to study how frightening I appear. It was as if I could see through my chestnut brown eyes right into a pit of fire.
Shaking my head, my eyes float to someone smiling at me from behind into the mirror, causing me to turn around.
"Hello, I don't think I've ever seen you around here before," he says excitingly.
"This is my first day."
I slide my left cheek into my palm, giving this boy all of my attention as I begin to notice all the things about him. A red haired boy with his fawn skin hiding underneath a letterman jacket. There's a smile on his face that he won't quite wipe away.
He's extremely happy for some reason.
"I don't have a partner. You can sit next to me."
He taps the seat next to him and without hesitation I grab my things but as I am beginning to sit beside him, another boy who seems to have taken a pair of scissors and cut a crown into a gray beanie appears. His eyes squint a little at me first then they find their way to the red haired boy who's being oh so nice.
"Jughead, you came in late," the red haired boy exclaims as the boy with the crown shrugs with no remorse.
"Okay Archie," he says back, sarcastically and with a scowl on his face before he floats somewhere else in the class.
I turn to look at Archie who's seriously content with the decision he made.
"I want you to feel welcomed - I'm sorry what's your name?"
"Veronica."
"Do you feel welcomed yet?"
He begins to laugh lightly before he pulls out a piece of gum to chew on, placing a stick on my notebook and socializing with some others in this class.
I take his peace offering before I look around the class and spot the ginger haired girl again, this time talking with two other girls who seemed to be making her happy.
Which is good.
"Hey Veronica, meet my best friend Betty," Archie excitingly says pulling my hand then eventually my body to a blonde haired girl and a dark haired boy sitting in the very first row of tables.
The boy seems to be immersed in another conversation as I lean against the sleek black table with Archie and wait as he begins to introduce me to this girl.
Everything about her screams the typical girl next door. Betty has beige skin that seems as soft as a pale pink tinge ran underneath but that pink tinge also matches the shade of pink lipstick on her lips. Her blonde strands are pulled into a tight pony that lay on a powder blue pullover with a white collar poking out from underneath.
Betty's crystal blue eyes seem to light up when she looks at me and I don't hesitate to look away.
"Nice to meet you Veronica," Betty smiles, extending her hand, in which I shake, before she puts that same hand on the boy sitting next to her so he can also greet me.
"Kevin Kel-"
"The cliche gay best friend," Kevin is eager to put that title out in the atmosphere, cutting Betty off, as I am equally as eager to meet him. "Have I seen you around here before? Veronica?"
"I don't think so."
"Is your last name Lodge?"
I nod as he nods back.
"I think I might know your father. Hiram Lodge?"
I nod again believing he would reveal my father's fate but that's as far as Kevin goes.
"You look just like him."
He excused himself, turning back to his conversation, leaving the three of us to look at the back of his dark brunette hair that's combed back.
"It's really a pleasure to meet you Veronica. Maybe we could get to know each a bit better a lunch since our teacher just walked in here."
I agree with her as Archie pulls me back to our seats and he begins would is a forty five minute period of him struggling to pay attention. Archie wasn't the typical jock moron that I had become accustomed to, but he wasn't very interested in school either.
Or rather his mind was elsewhere.
Occasionally, he would smile at me or look at the teacher but he was completely out of it. Probably anticipating lunch like I was. It would be a more refreshing setting than this place.
When class was almost over, Archie turned to me with yet another smile on his pink lips before he said something.
"I think you're really going to love it here Veronica."
