I did as much as I could.
But it just felt like it wasn't enough.
I held Cheryl's hand as she stared at her brother's lifeless body in a casket. As I tried to look away from that scene, I wondered how much joy and life he really did bring to everyone even if that meant Cheryl. The blood flowing through his cheeks when he blushes or the smile on his thin pink lips were for a time that I wasn't a part of and for a time I never will be a part of.
I let her hand go when her mother ripped her away, angry to see her daughter in a solid white dress, the same one Cheryl told me she wore with Jason the last time she saw him, and only to berate and scold her in front of the entire town.
But I still was there.
Offering whatever I could to help her and she only thanked me, leaving me be as she fled to her room and this is how I find myself walking to Pop's with the likes of Archie and Betty. Jughead skipped out to see his father who lived on the south side of town.
The forbidden part of town.
Betty didn't seem so much upset anymore, rather applauding me for being by Cheryl's side. I don't know why. And I guess if it came down to it, Betty wouldn't have done it. I firmly believe that despite how much it goes against her character.
Archie has been silent the entire time as Betty hums a song I can't even begin to identify.
I'm sure they haven't talked since yesterday despite having to interact with each other all the time and here I was in the middle of it all both literally and figuratively.
I didn't have the intention of possibly ruining a friendship but I believe that I'm almost done with that mission. Archie doesn't love Betty the way she loves him and only he's beginning to love me that way. I haven't acted on none of it, only staying quiet throughout the whole ordeal but I know Betty needs Archie and when Archie gets his heads out of the clouds, he'll realize he needs her just as much.
I guess I can try to patch something up now.
"Are you guys talking now?" I ask optimistically as Archie groans and Betty continues to hum.
My eyes float over to Archie, who's tangling his ginger strands with his fingers, staring up at the sky that's been showing willing signs of rain with the mysterious dark, gray clouds passing by on the completely white sky. I look at Betty who places her fingers on the back of her neck. Her hair was out for a rare occasion and the feeling of that could be unfamiliar to her.
