"Ew look how disgusting they look" Enjolras sneered at Marius and Cosette, who were walking with us. Marius had kissed Cosette goodbye at the gate of her fathers house. The others had all parted to go home, except us, Marius, Cosette and Grantaire as we all lived relatively near to one another.
"Enj, you're forgetting that we are like that" I laughed at him and he scowled.
"Yeah but when they do it, it's annoying" he said, sounding petty. I rolled my eyes at him.
"What have you got against Marius?" Grantaire asked him, drinking from his canister that had appeared out of nowhere.
"Nothing, I'm just worried that he's going to get wrapped up in this romance and forget about the most important thing... our revolution. Women are distracting " He said without thinking. Grantaire stiffened and looked at me. I heard Enjolras groan and hid his face in his hands. I just played with a leaf at my feet. Who was I kidding. I was just a novelty, something to enjoy before he goes off. Nothing special, just a distraction. I hated the feeling of my heart dropping and my eyes pricking.
"Do you know what, I think I'm going to head back to the Musain for a while" I muttered and quickly walked away. I heard Enjolras calling
"Wait, Lissy I didn't mean that I'm so sorry!"
But I ignored it.
He said exactly what he was thinking. He wasn't sugar-coating it to make me feel better. He just served me the truth.
"You idiot! Ferre is going to kill you" I heard Grantaire say but it was faint as I was quite far away.
I heard footsteps behind me and a moment later, Enjolras grabbed my arm. I couldn't deal with him right now.
"Please, I just want to be alone right now" I said quietly, snatching my arm away. And he let go. I walked away without a second glance.
I still didn't know my way around Paris very well so I just dawdelled around the part of town that I was used to. I slid in and out of market stalls and sat on a brick wall, doing some people watching for a while. It was a distraction from what I should have been thinking about. It was therapeutic in a way, to have some time to myself, something that I hadn't gotten over the past week.
"Felicité!" I heard a soft voice call from behind me. I turned around and widened my eyes, seeing the little girl I had seen when I first escaped, sitting with her doll at the side of a bleak building.
"Hello" I smiled, jumping off and going to sit next to her. "How are you Madamoiselle Violette?"
She giggled. "I'm fine Miss, how are you?" She asked.
I smiled to myself and sighed. "I'm wonderful"
"No you're not... what's wrong?" She asked, her little face furrowing and her button nose wrinkled.
"You wouldn't understand sweetheart" I said tiredly.
"Is it about love?" She asked, turning the corners of her blossom pink lips up.
"I guess it is. I take it you're an expert in this field" I grinned at the fragile girl.
"I am in fact! I think I love my friend" she said innocently.
"Really?! What's their name?" I asked, intrigued.
"Gavroche" she said, her eyes lighting up as she said my brothers name. I couldn't help thinking how sweet she sounded.
"I happen to know Gavroche" I said, flicking my hair playfully.
"Really?!" She gushed and I nodded.
"You know where the Musain is?" I asked and she nodded.
"I'll come and fetch you on Wednesday and you can come with me, Gavroche is their with me every day" I said and she looked extremely excited.
"Really?" She said, breathlessly. Even the smallest gesture of kindness meant a lot to this girl.
"Yes if that's alright with you?" I said.
"That's more than alright! Thank you so much Miss" she exclaimed. "Can Amelié come?"
"But of course! Make sure though, you don't lose her"
"I won't" she promised and wrapped her little arms around my torso and I kissed her pale forehead.
"I guess I better go now, my friend is probably looking for me" I sighed. I didn't want to leave this vulnerable and defenceless girl alone on the streets.
"If he's naughty any more then I shall talk to him" she declared and I shook my head smiling.
"You remind me of myself in so many ways" I sighed.
"That's good miss. I want to be just like you when I grow up. Strong and beautiful" she said twirling a strand of her hair around her second finger and grinning at me. My heart swelled but also panged at her words. Little she knew.
"Believe me, you will grow up to be a beautiful, independent and brave young woman." I told her gently, standing up.
"Goodbye Madamoiselle Felicité" she called out.
"Goodbye Madamoiselle Violette" I replied and began to make my way to the cafe.
As I walked away from the small girl, I could have sworn I felt a familiar gaze on me. I shrugged, brushing it off. I had bigger things to worry about.
I pushed open the door and the bell rang out. It was almost empty, a change to normal. Madame H was sitting behind the bar and a couple were seated in the far right corner of the cafe, hardly making any noise at all. It seemed quite awkward and Madame H looked a bit relieved when I walked in.
"Hello dear, where is your lover" she giggled but stopped when she saw my face fall. "Oh sweetheart, what happened?" She said like I was a child and led me over to a worn out couch in the corner. She held me tightly, expecting me to cry. I wasn't going to cry, why should I let a boy make me cry?
"Oh I forgot, our Lissy never cries" she said, trying to lighten the mood. I sighed and smiled forcefully.
"I mean it darling, what did he do?" She said sounding stern.
"Oh no it's just me being overemotional. I spun it out of proportion" I babbled and she covered my mouth with her soft hand.
"Lissy" she warned.
"Fine" I huffed. She would get it out of me one way or another. "Grantaire, E and I were talking about Marius and R asked why E was so harsh on him. Enj said that he was worried that he is losing his drive for the rebellion because of Cosette. Apparently, according to him, women are a distraction, getting in the way of what really matters" I said snarkily. His words stung even more this time. I wasn't even angry, more hurt than anything which was unusual. Her jaw tightened and she rolled her eyes.
"You wait till I see that boy" she muttered under her breath.
"Now's your chance" I scoffed as the door swung open and a panting Enjolras ran in, his head darting around until he saw us and his look softened and he tried to smile however he gulped when he saw Madame Houcheloup, his smile disappearing until he looked scared of the woman.
"I'll give you two some privacy, go on upstairs" she said sternly, like we were two children who wouldn't get along. I nodded and followed the boy in red who quickly went up into the meeting room. I definitely didn't want this conversation and I slumped into a chair as he shut the door, blocking out everything. I couldn't leave now. I'd have to listen to whatever he wanted to say whether I liked it or not.
