As soon as I reach the dark and empty bar, I huff. Of course it is clean. I check the large clock on the wall whilst circling the big room. 1:20 am. My fatigue had worn off but I still made my way down to my little room in the basement, making sure to grab my flickering candle sitting on the chest as I was terrified of the dark.
The fear stayed with me throughout my childhood. Whilst most people grew out of their fears when they reached teens, mine wouldn't go. It was as if the darkness represented something more. Loneliness. Which I was truly afraid of.
I fumble for my bed and crawl under the covers, keeping the heat in and I blow out the small candle. I stretch in my rickety bed, thinking about today, Éponines friends, and my life if it existed on the outside.
----------------------/------------------------
I wake up to the sunlight pouring through the little window. The sun was beginning to rise and golden, pink and orange flecks were breaking through the blue. It was like a scene that I had read in a book. The city was still asleep, letting the light bounce of the ground, illuminating everything. I remember that Éponine always told me to look for the beauty in everything. Her optimistic attitude graced every person she met and I loved her for that.
I quickly change into my rags that I wore yesterday and pulled my hair back into a low bun, wisps immediately coming loose. I reach for my broom and gather my mop and duster before I head upstairs. Before I manage to turn the handle on the door however, I hear a gentle knock on the window, and I jump around.
It was Éponines face yet again and I sigh in relief as I dump my things and unlock the window. She wasn't smiling today, she seemed rather flushed and stressed. After all, what the hell was she doing here at 6 am?!
Once I open the stuff lock and swing the window back, I open my mouth but I'm cut off by her quick whispers.
"Lissy, I've got a plan and you've gotta trust me on this" she began and I furrowed my brow in confusion. What was she talking about?
"I can get you out of here, with my friends help" she added, gesturing for her friend to come over. He had muddy brown hair and a charming smile. His eyes glistened just like my sisters. I smiled politely at him, which he returned.
"Marius, felicité. Felicité, Marius" she introduced. "Right back to what I was saying. This window is big enough to fit your body through, after all your only slight, and Marius can help lift you as I'm not that strong.... that is of course, if you want to leave?" She trailed off on the last part, reading my face for any emotion. I cracked a smile.
"Thank god one of us had brains"
They both laughed and we immediately got to work. Éponine pulled back the window as far as she could, trying to be as quiet as she could with the squeaky thing. After it reached its end, Marius reached one arm through and grabbed my waist, then he did the same with the other hand. I felt his strong arms lift me from the ground and I hovered in the air. He cursed quietly as he wriggled his arms through the window, trying to find the best way to get through. Eventually he found it. I was tipped diagonally and slotted through the window. I kicked my feet out and I felt Marius' grip change as he helped me safely onto the floor as I regained balance.
This was it, I was outside.
"Thank you" I whispered in disbelief, pulling 'Ponine and Marius into a hug. I felt tears prick in the corner of my eyes but my smile chased them away.
"It was my pleasure. I'm so glad I could help" Marius grinned and my sister smiled more. I turned to her.
"And now I'm finally able to hug you properly!" I giggled, pulling her close. "I love you" I whispered.
"I love you too"
"Don't want to break this apart but-" Marius said urgently, pointing up to the second floor where I could see the window rattling. I'm pretty sure it was their room. Éponines eyes widened and forcefully pulled us both to the wall as the window swung open. We were shielded by the overhang thankfully and whichever of them it was, couldn't see us. All that could be heard was the rugged breaths of us all. When we heard the window close we exhaled and looked at each other.
"Let's go, before they catch us" 'Ponine said and we both nodded in agreement. I grabbed my sisters arm and we ran far away from the inn.
Éponine led us deep into the town. It was gradually filling up but it was still fairly quiet. It was a strange feeling. I could feel the stony path beneath my feet, I could feel the slight wind blowing my long brown hair behind me, I could smell so many different things; bread from the bakery, earthy ground.
Marius and Éponine started talking while I examined everything around me. Every time he looked at her, her smile got a bit wider. She was also teasing him as well. I laughed to myself and she diverted her eyes to me. I winked at her and she glared back at me. I suddenly got an idea.
"So Marius what is it you do?" I said loudly walking in between the two lovebirds. Éponine coughed and he looked uncomfortable.
"I-I um well-" he started but 'Ponine shook her head, cutting him off.
"We might just give it up. There's no getting by Lissy" she explained and he smiled.
I smiled smugly while she pushed me. I laughed, hugging her. I did miss her.
"Me and a few of my friends are leading a rebellion, to bring rights to everyone to put it simply."
"That sounds interesting. Can I come?"
"We won't let any girls fight in it, it's too dangerous.... but I can talk to Enjolras and the others to maybe let you sit in on one of the meetings?" He proposed and I nodded eagerly.
This was going to be fun
