I heard the drums in the distance as we sprinted to the huge crowd gathering on either side of the road. We had manage to escape Cosette, Chetta and Madame H. I knew that Madame Houcheloup would try to stop us and Chetta and Cosette would join us. And there was no way on earth I was going to risk their lives for my selfishness.
"There!" Éponine hissed, pointing to a line of boys on the front row. They all looked terrified and I realised it was Les Amis.
"We have to hurry, it going to start in a minute!" I said, ambling along with my sister at my side. We seemed to blend in with the men. It was very clear where the women were, wearing long skirts and dressed in black. We seemed not to attract any attention which was a relief.
I squeezed my sisters hand as I ducked under the person on the second rows arm, and suddenly, we were directly next to our friends. I felt her hand quiver and I felt my twin sense pass over a surge of confidence to her, which she seemed to accept as the shaking stopped.
And then suddenly, Enjolras turned to examine the new person next to him, which was me. Thankfully, he only looked a little confused at the sight of a stranger wearing the badge but diverted his eyes, hearing the drums get closer and closer until the carriage was in view.
If everyone wasn't silent before, they were now, bowing their heads at the sight of the man they loved, being taken to be laid to rest. Ep and I joined in. I don't think I was really thinking about what was happening at that moment.
I held my breath as the carriage came closer. I recalled remembering about when Combeferre and Enjolras told the group of their plan, which was to start singing under their breaths, a tune that we all knew very well, eventually making all of the crowd to join in and see what happens from there. It wasn't a bad plan actually, yet I still held my breath as I watched Enjolras' mouth open, and the song escaped.
"Do you hear the people sing? Singing a song of angry men" He started, and Marius and I joined in on the second verse. Still singing, he turned and furrowed his eyes at me, confused as to how a newcomer would know the words.
I bowed my head as the others joined in. Courfeyracs tone-deaf voice soared behind me and I tried not to laugh, realising this was a serious situation and I realised it when flags appeared out of nowhere and Enjolras and Marius started climbing the carriage that was coming right past us at that moment.
The riders atop of the horses, tried hard to maintain professional and I noticed the soldiers kept a firm hand on their guns. As for the people, they had gotten the jist of what was happening, and they fiercely joined in, making us sound stronger and giving us the courage we needed to think that we actually may have a chance to change something through this.
I felt Éponine grab my hand and I let her pull me through the rowdy crowd, being careful to mind the horses who started rearing at the sight of us all. We dodged all of the guns and she lifted my by the leg so I could jump on top of the carriage, next to Courf and directly behind Enj and Marius. The song came to an end and the whole city fell silent, deadly tense at what was to come next.
And a gunshot was what came next.
The sound ripped our ears, causing a piercing scream to erupt from the people below. A soldier had accidentally fired, making a middle aged woman collapse at her husbands feet.
"You murderer! That was an innocent woman!" Shrieked Feuilly, and Bahorel had to hold him back from lunging at an officer and getting shot himself. We couldn't afford casualties or even death, so early on in this.
And that's how the fighting began.
The usually happy, chirpy streets came alive with bullets, mostly aimed at the four of us on top of LaMarques carriage. I heard Combeferre's pleads to get down from there and Éponine's for me. I just ignored them though, so transfixed on the scene that was unfurling in front of my eyes.
"Duck!" I heard Enj yell at me, and I fell to my knees just in time with the gunshot that was aimed at my head. For some reason, a sick smile spread on my face.
"Oh Hun, two can play at this game" I smirked, effortlessly whipping out my gun and wiping two officers out and onto the floor.
I felt eyes peering at me as I shot, and I followed them to where my brothers head was peeping out of the elephant in the distance. I had rather good eyesight. He cocked his head to the sight before shouting "Vive la France!"
"That was a good shot" Courf said, gliding past me to shoot a few of his own.
"Please get down Lissy! You're scaring me!" Éponine pleaded to me. I didn't get down, but I crouched behind a raised part of the carriage, providing a sufficient cover for me.
"Charge!" I heard one of the soldiers boom and suddenly, hundreds of soldiers were after the same target, us.
"To the barricades!" I heard Enjolras shout.
