"Oh no, I've run out of sugar" Chetta mumbled to herself. All of the girls were in the kitchen. We had decided to bake something to give us some girl-time and leave the boys for a bit. It was rather nice, being able to talk to them about things that I couldn't talk to Enjolras about.
"Oh I can run to the shop if you want? It's only about 10 minutes away" I said, and she nodded gratefully.
"Thanks Lissy" she said.
"Oh I can go with you?" Cosette offered and I beamed as she wiped her floury hands on the front of her dress and followed me to the front door.
We skipped to the market and I handed the coin to Cosette as she weaved in and out of stalls, looking closely for the missing ingredient. I leaned against the wall and waited. Cosette was better at me at all of this as she had much more experience.
"Look who it is" I heard breathily in my right ear. My heart stopped as I felt a cold clammy hand cover my mouth and grasp my neck tightly to stop me from screaming. I thrashed about, trying to break free from the person who had sworn to hunt me down. And now I was his.
I felt a piece of cloth roughly tied around my eyes and the same around my mouth, acting as a gag. Tears spilled from my eyes. I was scared out of my mind.
Cosette would be looking for me, I thought as he pulled me away so he wouldn't be seen. And then I received a kick to my gut that sent me straight to the floor. A second one knocked me out cold.
Cosette
I shouted for my friend, a little nervous. I hoped I hadn't lost her. She said she would be waiting for me by the brick wall and I could have sworn that I had circled it at least 3 times. She was nowhere to be seen."Lissy?" My voice started to crack but I covered it with a smile. I was kidding myself more than anyone.
And I saw a pair of beady black eyes from an alleyway. I shuddered as they followed me as I walked over tentatively. My hair was blowing behind me in the stronger wind and I heard grumbles from the sky.
I saw 2 men join the eyes in the alleyway. I couldn't bare to look at one of them. It was Thenardier. His red hair had turned grey yet he still had the air of menace about him. It unsettled me and made me feel sick to my stomach.
And I realised.
They would have Felicité.
"Lissy!" I screamed, hurtling over and delivering a punch square into the jaw of Thenardier. It sent him toppling over and the man next to him was too shocked to do anything. The eyes did not falter or flicker. They remained on me and they were too far into the dark alley that I couldn't place a face to them.
And then the action began.
The man who had been standing next to Thenardier, pushed me back. He was strong and I stumbled a little but did not fall. I thanked God for my heels as they met his leg loudly and he yelped in pain. Still, the eyes were following me.
"Oh you'll pay for that!" He said evilly, like he was in disbelief that someone had even attempted that. I was pretty sure I was the first person to do that. I saw a glimmer of silver before he tore at my cheek and dropped the metal with a shatter at my feet. I felt a burning sensation but it was dull. It didn't really hurt but I saw droplets of my blood fall onto my white blouse. I did the first thing that came to my head. I kicked him where it hurt...with my heel.
He groaned in pain as he fell back and I took this as my opportunity to grab the knife and I didn't even think before slamming it into his arm. He made a sound but I didn't see if I had killed him as two arms pulled me away.
"Just you wait" I heard Thenardiers voice in my ear. I was trapped in his grip and that's when I saw Lissy on the floor. I was sure she was dead. Her face was pale and there was blood covered all over her top. Her eyes were shut and mouth parted slightly.
"You, you" I said, struggling to get my words out because of anger and pain and sadness. I didn't even need to, as two heroes came to the rescue at that moment.
I heard the force of Musichettas punch to Thenardier which made his eyes roll to the back of his head as he slumped to the floor and I moved away. Éponine went straight for beady-eyes, charging like a bull. His eyes widened before they disappeared completely and we all gasped for breath. We had won?
"Lissy!" I cried, scrambling for the lifeless body of the girl who was next to the man Éponine had knocked out.
"I'll carry her home. Chetta, make sure Cosette is okay" Éponine said like a drill sergeant, scooping up her sister and running out of the alley.
Chetta let my cry into her chest and she kept one hand strong on my waist, knowing that if she let go, I would fall and never get up.
"Chetta I killed someone" I sobbed, rubbing my eyes and feeling the cut on my face. I winced in pain.
"Yes and they nearly killed you and possibly Lissy. You need to see Ferre and Joly, quickly" she said, lifting my body off the floor and chasing after Éponine all the way back to her house.
I had just killed someone? I had killed someone. And now I had let Felicité die. It was all my fault and I couldn't bare to see the boys faces when they saw what had happened.
