Cosette
I saw tears running down Chetta's face as she fumbled with the front door. When she opened it, Éponine pushed past with her sister, screaming for the boys. We followed quickly behind, Chetta's arm still on me.We made our way into the kitchen that we had left our uncooked mixture in. Tidying up didn't even seem worth doing.
Grantaire was the first to enter as Éponine was laying Felicité on the table and I was being forced down onto a chair. The more people who entered, the more my vision was beginning to whiten.
I heard screams from them all and they parted for Marius and Enjolras to run through last. They stopped in front of us, taking in everything that was in front of them.
Marius was the first to move. He ran straight towards me, carefully holding me as I started crying again into his shirt. I was certain that I was getting blood everywhere but I didn't care, which was unlike me.
In the corner of my watery eyes, I saw Enjolras eyes rammed shut. He was shaking his head in disbelief and Gavroche had to clench his hand to keep him aware of his surrounding.
"No" I heard him repeatedly mutter, stumbling over to where Felicité lay peacefully. He touched her hand tentatively and his eyes windened.
"She's still a bit warm!" he shouted, making the boys jump into action. Joly rushed over and started feeling her neck and wrist and Ferre pulled up her shirt, checking where the source of the blood was. Enjolras started shaking.
"Enjolras, sit down" I heard Grantaire command. Nobody had ever told Enjolras what to do, yet this cynic was taking control right then.
"No" he screamed" tears running freely down his face and he started shaking even more. "No! No! No!" He kept yelling until Bahorel pulled him to the floor and brought his knees up on either side of his head and made him take deep breaths.
"I'm not sure if I can do anything. I think it's too late. But I can try something. It might not work" Joly said desperately.
"Do it!" Enjolras shouted between gasps.
"I need a minute" Joly said suddenly, opening the back door and slamming it shut behind me. I wondered what on earth was happening and why he was outside and I ignored Marius' questions and followed Joly out of the house like a ghost.
"Joly? Are you okay?" I whispered once the door was shut. He turned to face me and I gasped. Tears were streaming down his face.
"I can do it Sette. I can save her life. But if I mess it up, she'll be gone forever and it will be my fault. I've never performed this operation. It will fail and I will be responsible for the death of Felicité." He said, trying to keep calm while his voice wobbled.
"Hey hey, you're a doctor! I believe you can do it. You've saved her before and you will save her again and I will be right next to you when you do it" I said, rubbing his arm. I couldn't bare to see the happy one in the group like this. It broke me.
"You really think so?" He asked uncertainly.
"Yes! Of course" I smiled. "In there is a girl who needs you now more than ever and you are the only one who can change that. You will do it" I said, persuading him. He took a deep breath and nodded, wiping his eyes and regaining his doctor like posture.
"Let's go save Lissy" he said, cracking a smile.
He set up all of his equipment and Combeferre took control of leading everyone to wait in the living room, leaving me, Enjolras, Joly, and himself. It took a few kisses to get Marius to leave. He wanted to stay by my side until I told him that the wound on my cheek wasn't actually deep.
"Cosette, do you mind if I check your-?" Combeferre asked, crouching to reach the level I was at, sitting on a wooden chair.
"Oh yeah sure" I said, zoning out and focusing on a shaking Joly. I could practically hear his heart beat as he peeled off the blouse Felicité was wearing.
Combeferre sighed. "Are you going to tell me what happened? We got so caught up what happened that I guess we never asked if you were okay. Or what happened. I'm pretty sure you saved her life though" he said, smiling apologetically as he started to disinfect my cheek, causing me to wince.
"Well we were out getting sugar and she was waiting by the fence. When I came back she was gone but I had a feeling that the man who was standing in the alley had something to do with it. I started to walk towards him but I could only see his eyes. Then Thenardier and another man came along when I realised that Lissy was there. I kinda lost control of myself and I pushed Thenardier and I think he passed out for a minute. I managed to fight the other one as he tried to get a hold of me. And, Ferre, I think I killed him. I stabbed him" I said, my voice wobbling but continuing none-the-less. "Thenardier came back and grabbed me, he was about to hurt me but Chetta and Ponine came just in time. Chetta punched Thenardier and he was knocked out cold and Ponine took care of the man with the eyes. And yeah..." I said trailing off.
"You're a hero!" Combeferre said, sounding awe-struck. I shook my head fiercely.
"And besides, how did you get that?" He asked and I pouted.
"He cut me with a knife" I said, making it sound more like a question.
"Oh Cosette" he said, finishing whatever he was doing with my cheek and putting his doctors stuff away. "I'm going to tell the others what happened and update them with how Lissy is. I'm sure they will be proud and blown away by your heroism." He said, going over to Joly and peering over his shoulder, nodding along to whatever he was doing and occasionally muttering under his breath. He then patted a terrified Enjolras on his head and left the room.
"Cosette?" I heard the boy mumble and I looked up, smiling sympathetically. He gestured for me to go over and so I did, and sank to the floor next to him.
"You may have prevented Lissy from dying. I don't know how to thank you for your bravery. I, I have no words" he uttered.
"Listen to me, your girlfriend is a fighter. She isn't going to give up, not now. And you don't have to thank me for anything. Please" I said, hugging him from the side and he relaxed.
"I really do. I, I just... thank you" he babbled and I giggled quietly. "I'm sorry for what you had to do as well. You put your own life in grave danger to save her. You are braver than everyone I know Cosette. You are the true hero" he said, looking me in the eyes.
"Enjolras, I love her as well and I don't take back my actions at all. I'm glad I managed to do something. I'm just going to go and check on her" I sat, getting up from my spot on the floor and I glided to the area where a silent Joly stood, concentrating fiercely on Lissy's deep injury that was well lit by a candle. I couldn't bare to look at what he was doing. He was so far into her skin on her stomach that it made me feel ill just seeing the blood that was seeping into material he was using.
I sat down opposite him, careful not to distract him and held her limp hand.
"I'm pretty sure she will be able to feel your touch, and hear you" he muttered, under his breath not once tearing his eyes away from the body in front of him.
"Lissy, it's me Cosette. I rescued you. Wake up for me please. Wake up and everything will be fine." I whispered desperately.
An hour or so passed and Combeferre flitted in and out of rooms, kneeling next to Enjolras to make sure he was okay. And then Joly spoke.
