Chapter One: So Far Away
[Cilyn Carson]
"How was your week? Did you do anything?" I thought about everything I've done and how I haven't been productive at all.
"Well, I didn't leave the house till today. Other than that and searching for a babysitter I haven't been able to find someone suitable but I'm working on that." Dr. Sutts wrote something down before he opened up a drawer and dropped his book into it.
"How about we get to know each other. We don't know each other very well and one very important thing about a checkup is that you know your client and your client knows you. How about we become friends. Friends always talk more than someone you're forced to speak to. You start first, what do you want to know?" I was slightly surprised. When I thought of doing this I hadn't expected him to try to be friends.
"Uh, what's your first name?" He cocked his head to the side and I could almost see the laughter in his eyes.
"You can call me Colt. My full name is Isaac Colten Sutts though." He gave me a small smile before continuing, "what's your preferred nickname?"
"Some people call me CC or Car. I guess either one works. What's your favorite thing to do on the weekend?" He gave me a slightly surprised look before thinking it over. His face scrunched up making him look almost identical from our first meeting.
"I'd have to say visiting the orphanage. No matter how much I hate the place I'm always going there to check up on the kids." I gave a somewhat confused look.
"You visit an orphanage? Why do you do that? I actually never heard of that unless someone's trying to adopt..." He looked down at his lap with a frown before shaking it off and answering.
"I was raised in an orphanage. Never met my family. I used to watch over the younger kids there but they're all teenagers now so I stop by and see what they're up to. They were the only people I could consider family." I frowned now.
"You were never adopted? You lived there most of your life and no one ever considered you?" He shook his head.
"It's not like that. I had plenty of opportunities to be adopted but I had a friend I wouldn't leave behind. I was never adopted because they didn't want him also. By the time we were teenagers' no one ever came to try and sweep me away." A small smile came to his lips as he thought about it.
"Why wouldn't anyone adopt him?" Now his frown came back and he seemed lost for a second. He looked through me and stared at whatever his mind was revealed to him.
"He had a lot of mental issues and no one wanted someone who was considered unfixable." His frown became deeper as his eyes blanked and he seemed to no longer be here.
"I always wondered what triggered him. I wasn't sure if it was another family or maybe the other kids in school that made fun of him, but he died when he was 15. After that, I decided to help anyone with their mental issues. I guess that's how I chose my career." His smile came back and his eyes focused back on me.
"I'm sorry to hear that. I'm glad you chose this career but I wish it would've been under different circumstances." He nodded and gave me a gentle smile before stretching and thinking for a moment.
"I don't think you ever told me the real reason you came here. If you don't mind me asking why did you come to see me?" I looked over to the stroller my son was strapped into before looking back up to him.
"My wife died. We knew it was the most probable thing but I still didn't have time to prepare for her death. Birth gave me a baby boy, but it took the one person I loved more than myself. She took a part of me that day I can only hope to get it back one day. I would like my son to be surrounded by love, not depression or grief. So I came here to get my life in check." He gave me a sad smile before standing up and walking over to me.
