"Don't lie to me. I'm tired of it."

I swallowed and glanced both ways before I pulled out. "Lex, if you just let me explain-"

I could see my phone, all broken and destroyed, but I couldn't move to get it.

My forehead rested on the steering wheel, right where the air bag should have deployed from. My legs were completely numb from pain, which should have been a good thing except I was afraid I was paralyzed. My arms had tiny little needles poking anywhere the skin was visible to air. Glass was everywhere and there was a draft coming into the car.

"Hello? Is there someone in here? Can you hear me?"

I shifted my eyes but I didn't see anything other than the floor. I didn't know where I was or who it was that was calling for me but they didn't sound familiar.

"Hello?" It was a man's voice I was hearing. Calm and soft.

I opened my mouth to talk but my throat was all scratchy and I coughed. My lungs felt like they were filled with sand. Dry, dry sand.

"I'm a paramedic; my name is Ken. I'm going to help you out of here, okay?"

I coughed again.

The man, Ken, said nothing more. About a minute later, a chainsaw started.

I squeezed my eyes shut and cringed, waiting for everything to be over. But over could have meant dying. And as much as I hated my life at the current moment, I didn't want to die.

Time seemed to fly by. One minute my eyes were closed and I was focusing on my breaths. The next minute, the voice was back and sounded closer than before.

When I decided to open my eyes again, I was laying on my back, a brace on my neck. A man was sitting beside me, watching me. His eyes were brown and so familiar. I knew I'd never seen this man before but his eyes... I couldn't look away.

"We're taking you to the hospital. They're going to take good care of you."

I didn't recognize this new voice, this new man, either but... why did he seem familiar?

I opened my mouth and my throat screamed at me in pain. My eyes watered.

The man put his hand on mine and it warmed me up. The warm hand, the brown eyes...

Liam.

No, it wasn't Liam. But this man made me feel like Liam was right there. Right with me. Watching over me. Protecting me, even.

I missed him so much. More than he'd ever know.

But I screwed everything up. Maybe Liam was a fool for breaking up with me and causing me to become depressed. But it wasn't his fault that I went after Lexi's pills. I got myself into my own mess and I had to take ownership of it.

I had to do something.
