When I opened my eyes, everything was fuzzy and out of focus. The room was bright and filled with white objects. The blankets were either white or a very light gray. The cover on my broken finger was a darker gray with blue padding inside. It was the only color I could focus on.
I rolled my head to the right and I recognized a black pantsuit. One hand was on the person's knee. The other was rested on my arm. When I moved my eyes up the person, I saw a red shirt inside the jacket of the dress jacket. Over it was a silver chain with a gold wedding band on it. When I moved my eyes up as far as they would go, I saw my mother's face. There were dark circles under her eyes and she wasn't wearing make up. Her hair wasn't dirty but it wasn't as clean as I knew my mother preferred.
"Hi, sweetheart." She whispered. She lifted her hand from my arm and brushed my hair off my forehead. "You're okay."
My throat still ached when I opened my mouth to speak but it felt more like a cold ache than a damaged ache. "Lex..."
"Shh. Don't try to talk."
I blinked and a tear rolled down my cheek.
"Get some rest and we can talk when you're feeling better." She kissed my forehead then got to her feet. "I'll be right out in the waiting room if you need me."
I squeezed her hand the best I could then watched her head for the door. My eye caught someone else in the room and I wished I hadn't.
When I saw who it was, I immediately got mad. As much as I'd missed him and wanted to see him, I hated him for what he'd done to me. It wasn't his fault I was where I was but if he hadn't dumped me, I wouldn't have done what I did.
I didn't want mom to get worried or upset so I waited until the door was shut before I said anything. "Why?"
"I needed to know you were okay."
"Didn't Lex..."
He shook his head and looked down at his hands in his laps. "I needed to see for myself."
I tried to push myself into a sitting position but my body screamed at me. My left arm buckled from the weight, my chest got tight, and a sharp pain shot up my spine.
Liam put an arm around me and helped me back against the bed. "Take it easy, Liv. You can't just recover from something like this in a few days."
I raised my eyebrows. It felt like something was pushing one of them down. "What..."
"You were in a car accident."
"I don't..." A car accident? I couldn't remember anything like that. The last thing that came to mind was seeing Xavier. Could it have something to do with him?
"The doctor said that could happen. The drugs and the bump on your head caused you to have a short burst of memory loss."
"Drugs?"
"Anxiety meds." He said softly. It wasn't the kind of soft that said he didn't want me to know. It was the kind of soft that said he didn't want to talk about it. Because he was ashamed.
I reached out to touch his hand and saw my arm covered in a purple cast. There were scratches on my hand where the cast ended.
"Liam..."
"This is my fault, isn't it? If I hadn't been so... so stupid-"
"I made... my own... d-decisions."
He ran his hands over his face and into his hair. His eyes were red and it looked like he was close to crying. "I never wanted to break up with you. We never saw each other and I know now that that was my fault. I shouldn't have expected you to change your life for me. When Lex called me, I talked to the guys. With Zayn gone from the group and our album released, we decided to take a break. I want to be here with you right now."
I pulled his head down to mine and pressed my forehead to mine. I pressed my lips to his and tasted salt water almost immediately.
"You need to rest." He whispered, only taking his lips from mine. The rest of him was still pressed against me.
"Promise you won't..."
"I'm not going anywhere."
