"Mike? Mikey! You still alive or what?" I could hear the voice over my radio but I didn't want to respond. I wanted to be dead, I wanted it all to be over. "This is your window, damn it! If you're still out there you gotta say something!"
I tried to speak but the pain in my body tightened its grip. My words melted into a groan and a cough but that was enough to tip off the person speaking to me that I was, in fact, still alive.
"Look, I know you just took a beating, but you gotta get up. They're coming, you hear that? They know what we're really doing now and they're coming!"
"Let them come."
"Really? That's all you have to say?"
"Nothing we can do, we been sniffed out, we lose."
"That's not true, there's still a way to stop them."
I let out another groan. I didn't want to admit it but I guess I still had some kind of hope.
"You're close to their mainframe. All their data is backed up on those servers, all their programs. If you can destroy it all then that's it for them! They won't be able to replicate, or regenerate. We could wipe them out in a year."
"Fine, where's the mainframe?"
"Just down the hall to your left. It's usually heavily guarded but our little distraction outside worked until you messed everything up. The drones are coming back quick, though, so you gotta be quicker."
I got to my feet and followed the directions I was given over the radio. When I got to the mainframe, there was still a drone guarding the entrance. I fired my last EMP round and the electric blue streak fried the drone's circuits.
"I'm here, what do I do."
"There's a power source somewhere, you need to destroy it."
"Wait, what?"
There was silence over the radio, I could hear the person on the other end trying to form the appropriate words. "They killed your family, Mikey. They destroyed your home."
"That power source is nuclear! If I destroy it--"
"Do you think the machines would hesitate? Do you think that if they had a chance like this they'd pass it up?"
"I'll die!"
"You'll die either way! They're coming for you, man, they're almost there. Either you let them find you and torture you and eventually wipe us out or..."
"Or I take them all down with me right now."
"Are you gonna let all those deaths be for nothing? You know how many of our people died trying to get you in there? You can die a failure or you can die a hero."
"I wasn't supposed to die at all."
"We're all supposed to die."
I withdrew my knife and looked at the six inch blade. I switched it on and watched the steel light up as it charged. "Fine," I said. I could hear the oncoming horde of machines now. "Where's this power source?"
