________________________Later that day, during the final night of the Festival, Evie and Doug ran away from the prince. Again.
The mysterious girl and man with her ran from the guards, ignoring their orders to stop. Doug ran in front of Evie, while she looked back and saw Prince Chad behind her.
Doug jumped halfway down the stair and landed at the bottom. Evie quickly ran on each step, when she suddenly couldn't move. She looked down and saw that a sticky black substance, pitch, kept her in place. She saw that Doug ran back to her, and saw that Chad was on top of the stairs case. Then everything just froze in place. The prince didn't move, which gave her time to think.
"Evie, come on," Doug said while pulling her arm.
"I need think. He's a smart prince and prepared this time." She smiled, realizing what it meant. "Which means that he cares."
"Then get your shoes and come on."
"I have to make a decision. Why can't I stay and be caught?"
"What if knew who he knew who you are when you know what you're not what he thinks that he wants?"
"But what if I am?"
"Whichever you pick, do it fast. You starting to stick to the steps of the palace."
"This is my first big decision, Doug." She said while stepping out of the sticky steps. "The choice isn't easy. Coming to a ball is exciting but once we're there it's scary."
"You've stalled long enough. Just choose."
"I should avoid the collision. At our home, they don't care about me. I'll be better off there, where there's nothing to choose."
"Wait, things don't have to collide. Don't decide, just leave a clue."
"That's it! I'll just leave something to see what he'll do. I'll just leave him..." Evie looked at her shoes, which were still stuck on the steps. "My shoe."
"Then you can see what he'll do." She smiled and stuck one of her shoes back on the pitch. A moment later, she ran from Chad and didn't look back.

Prince Chad came down the steps and saw the girl run away. He looked down and saw one of the blue slippers stuck in the black pitch. When the steward came behind him, Chad spoke.
"The Festival is over, send everyone home. I now know who shall be my bride."
"And the princess?" The steward asked.
"Don't worry, she won't get far with one shoe."

Evie and Doug ran through the path they went for the past few nights. They heard someone very close behind them, and they both stopped in a small glade.
"Stand back!" Evie said, preparing to use her shoe as a weapon. When they saw who it was, they saw the woman they had met the previous night.
"Stop! Just hear me out!"
"You attacked me last night!"
"I didn't attack you, I attacked your shoe. I need it." Mal then took out the bean she still had. "I have a magic bean in exchange for it."
"Magic bean?" Mal nodded, handed her the small vegetable. The two looked at it, only seeing a normal looking piece of bean. Evie threw the bean aside to the dirt, causing a small spark of magic and not being noticed by the three. "That's crazy!"
