Stiles had always been good at reading people. His father being a cop could probably be credited for that. Ever since they were little, Scott and Stiles had had a system: Scott, the trusting one that just wanted to be friends with everyone; and Stiles, the less trusting one who always knew of the bad in people. Reading people had become Stiles' specialty. How he wished that day he hadn't been able to read Adam.
Devastation, regret, and absolute horror all managed to morph into one facial expression as Stiles' words sank in. It was wave after wave, expression after expression as Stiles' words somehow managed to get in touch in with the last shred of Adam's humanity.
"She shouldn't be dead because that prophecy came to pass over a hundred years ago."
How could that be?
No.
Stiles was lying.
He had to be.
There was no way Adam had been so convinced of something that had already happened.
There was no way.
Lexi was dead.
True or not, Lexi was dead.
Adam collapsed onto his knees, and screamed.
Scott and Stiles had never seen anything like it. Sheriff Stilinski was absolutely devastated when Claudia died, but his reaction was nothing like this. So raw, so deep, as if the very light of Adam's soul had been put out. As if Adam's very heart had just been ripped to shreds. He was broken. Truly broken.
Scott turned to Stiles. "What do you mean the prophecy already came to pass?" He asked softly, in fear that saying it too loud would break Adam further.
Stiles turned his body away from Adam as he recounted the story. "There was this alpha, right, like a hundred years ago named Finn Smith. Now the dude described himself as "a mighty alpha", ruled with fear and intimidation. One day, this omega stumbles in, no pack, no family - nothing. So Finn takes him in, teaches him the ways of the pack, cares for him, pretty much raises him as his second. But the omega doesn't like the way Finn rules, thinks everyone deserves to be saved, that everyone should be treated with respect and equality, Every time Finn tries to make the omega act like him, the omega refuses. One day Finn's had enough, pretty much threatens the guy's life if he doesn't step up, and you know what happened next?"
Scott's eyes went wide. "The Omega became a True Alpha."
Stiles nodded, confirming. "Shiloh Butler. The last True Alpha before you."
"Did he kill Finn?"
Stiles shook his head. "There obviously couldn't be two alphas, so they fought it out, but Finn couldn't beat him. Shiloh refused to kill Finn, though, so instead the pack voted and kicked him out. He didn't live much longer after that."
Of course he didn't. Lone wolves don't last very long.
"Wait, wait," Scott shook his head, eyes scrunching. "How do you know all this?"
Stiles deadpanned. "My best friend is turned into a werewolf, a dark druid terrorizes Beacon Hills, and you think I wouldn't research any of that?"
Scott smacked Stiles' arm. "You didn't think to say anything? Make any kind of connection? Adam is literally Finn Smith 2.0!"
"I can't think of everything, Scott!"
Scott just rolled eyes. There were more important things to deal with. "Okay," he huffed. "What exactly does this mean?"
