The night was cold and dark, the full moon shimmering amongst the black skies. Nightfall always had a sense of eeriness and mystery, but tonight was different. Tonight was way, way different. A girl, a young adolescent girl, was running away from her destiny.
The ground crunched underneath her footsteps, and the air was cold against her clamy skin. The moon shone high above her. She could feel it's power coursing through her veins. Her heart beat faster, the adrenaline began to kick in, her senses heightening -
No. She held her breath and calmed her heart, willing it away. She couldn't change. Not now.
A voice screamed behind her. "NICOLE! NICOLE! GET BACK HERE!"
"No, no, no, please no," she whispered, briefly closing her eyes before sprinting faster. Her chest tightened and the extra weight of the bag on her back inflicted more strain on her. Still, she risked it. She glanced behind her, long enough to see a man running after her, screaming on top of his lungs with a glass bottle raised in his hand.
She ran faster. She was not about to let him ruin everything for her. Not after she just lost the most important thing in her life.
She looked up at the moon, full and gleaming, and was once again reminded of its power. A power she didn't want. Once again, she ignored the temptation and pressed on, sprinting as fast as she could. All while the shouting continued behind her, the man screaming at her, demanding her to stop, threatening her, cursing her, chasing her down. She couldn't believe that man was her father. The truth was, Adam Reed hadn't been a father in two years. And it took two years for for her to finally grow weary of his nonsense and runaway. But something went wrong and Adam found out that she was running away. He had chased her down since the sun was high the sky. Judging by the height and brightness of the moon and stars, it was past midnight.
"NICKY, I SWEAR ONCE I GET MY HANDS ON YOU!"
How he could still scream so loudly after hours was beyond her. Tired of running and all his shouting, She knew she had to get rid of him at the earliest opportunity. While he knew she was running away it was highly unlikely that he knew where. They had been running for hours, and her destination wasn't much further.
She took a sharp right turn, then a left, then another right, and sprinted faster, faster, faster. But the voice continued, almost closer, louder. Panicked, she took a left and slammed face first into a tree. She thumped onto the ground and slammed her head on the soil. The impact knocked the breath out of her. She struggled to get up, but her entire body suddenly felt like dead weight, and she slumped onto the ground. Adam's was heard not too far away.
She began to hyperventilate, struck by panic, trying to get up only to fail. She felt like crying. She had been running for hours, and her body burned with pain. She couldn't move, or feel her legs. And the temptation of the full moon only grew worse and worse as the night drew on. Nicole closed her eyes, willing the tears away, willing her heart to be stilled, begging for air to come to her. She was fast, but Adam was faster. He was more experienced in this, and because of his high tolerance for alcohol he couldn't get drunk, meaning that while he drunk heavily, he had been chasing her sober all this time. She knew there was only one way out of this. She just regretted having to do it.
The girl laid there, catching her breath and listening to the foot steps come closer until they were right in front of her. Her whole body trembled.
